With Sam Bradford’s season ending ACL injury, the Rams front office has been put in a very difficult situation. Having a backup quarterback that can come in and win games has grown more and more important in the NFL, and that’s exactly what the Rams dont have.

Kellen Clemens has served as a “coach” for Sam Bradford the past couple of seasons and now he will be expected to go in and win games. Clemens filled in for Bradford at times during the 2011 season, but we all know how that season turned out. Will this season be different and can Clemens jump in where Bradford left off and fill the void at quarterback.

Clemens is currently 4-8 as a starter throughout his career. three of the four wins for Clemens came in 2007 against the Steelers and then against the ailing Dolphin and Chiefs. Clemens fourth win came in 2009 against the helpless Buccaneers.

The Rams have a very difficult schedule ahead as they have to play the Seahawks twice, the 49ers, Cardinals, Saints, Colts, Bears, Titans, and Buccaneers, all of those teams, minus the Buccaneers, are fairly decent teams. Out of all those game, there might be one win in there for Clemons.

Clemens has started games for the Rams before. Back in 2011 Clemens went 0-3 with the Rams while Bradford was dealing with an ankle injury. Those losses came against the Bengals, Steelers, and 49ers.

In his career Clemens has thrown for 2,290 yards, seven touchdowns, and 13 interceptions. If Clemens is going to win games for the Rams, the young players are going to have to step up and the defense is going to have to carry this team.

The only other options for the Rams are Brady Quinn and Austin Davis, who quite frankly arent huge upgrades from Clemens. Out of the two Davis may have the best shot at playing at some point this season just due to the face that he somewhat knows the system and the personnel around him.

Rams fans have been in this situation before. Back in 1999 a certain quarterback went down and a certain quarterback came into replace him. That certain quarterback was Kurt Warner and he ended up leading the Rams to win the Super Bowl. If that happened again it would definitely be a shock. Things like that dont happen very often, and more than likely it wont happen this year.

If it’s one thing we can almost be certain about it’s that the Rams are in a spot in which they more than likely will end up with not one, but two top ten picks in next year’s draft. If the draft were to start today the Rams would be picking in the seventh and tenth spots.

This would guarantee the Rams two top tier players in next year’s draft or even more future picks as teams like the Eagles, who may end up with a good record but need a quarterback, could try to trade up with the Rams to grab one of the top quarterbacks in the draft.

Will Clemens step in and fill the void at quarterback? More than likely not. He may win the Rams a game or two, but dont go on expecting the Rams to compete for a wild card. More than likely the Rams will be adding elite talent to an already talented roster come April.

The chances of Clemens coming in and being successful is small.Clemens could come in and lead this team to victory, but it’s just an unlikely scenario. This is the NFL however and crazier things have happened.
