Is Greg Robinson On The Road To Being A Bust?

Earlier this week, St. Louis Rams head coach Jeff Fisher announced that number two overall pick Greg Robinson would not be starting against the Minnesota Vikings.

"“We made the decision that in the opener that we’re better off going with experience. Doesn’t mean to say that he won’t play in the game, but we’re going to go with guys that have a lot of snaps under their belt right now.”"

This means that the Rams will be rolling with free agent pickup Davin Joseph. Joseph is a former pro bowler, but he hasn’t been relevant over the past few seasons. Last season he was rated the second worst guard on Pro Football Focus, and did not play in 2012. In 2011 he made the Pro Bowl, but he still was the 47th ranked guard on Pro Football Focus and was the 10th worst run blocker in the league and allowed the 15th most quarterback hurries.

The St. Louis Rams drafted Greg Robinson NUMBER TWO OVERALL!!! For the Rams not to be starting their NUMBER TWO OVERALL draft pick, ahead of a guy who has been almost irrelevant, it is a tad bit concerning. They didnt draft this guy to sit on the bench, they drafted him to be the centerpiece of their offensive line for years to come.

We should have seen this coming when the Rams didn’t start Robinson in the third preseason game, but at that point not a lot was thought of it. According to Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post dispatch the Rams didn’t want to start Robinson in that game as switching from guard to tackle numerous times during the preseason had been a lot to handle for the rookie.

When the Rams didn’t start him then, it was a little bit concerning, but now that they aren’t starting him to begin the 2014 season, it is very concerning. Yes, he very well could play against the Vikings, but the fact that he isn’t starting, is frustrating.

It was known that Robinson was raw coming out of Auburn, but the plan was to put him at guard in order to help him, and apparently the exact opposite has happened. He is a rookie and he is going to have his speed bumps, but those speed bumps need to be worked through, not hidden on the bench.

The St. Louis Rams really needed to do well in the 2014 NFL Draft, and although it is still early, Robinson doesn’t look to be headed down a good road. It may be a little too early to call, but the Les Snead and Jeff Fisher campaign may have made their first big draft mistake.
