St Louis’ Kenny Britt ‘Wants To Stay’ With Rams

Earlier this week, NFL.com’s Marc Sessler reported that Rams receiver Kenny Britt publically stated his wish to remain in St Louis going into 2015. Britt was, as many predicted preseason, the leading receiver on the roster this campaign with a career-high 748 yards. He also had the highest average gain per catch with 15.6 yards, picked up the most first downs with 33 and was the only player in double figures with 20+ yard catches with 13.

Quarterbacks, offensive linemen and safeties are featuring most prominently for the Rams in many of the early mock drafts. Austin, Quick and Bailey are already also on the roster, as well as the established receiving abilities of Cook and Kendricks, so there is really no need for Fisher to take a wideout in the draft. Looking at free agency, some of the top names available include Dez Bryant, Torrey Smith and Jeremy Maclin – although the odds realistically of the Rams making a bid for any of these is fairly slim, particularly given the teams’ precarious salary cap situation, ranking 30th in the NFL in available space.

Another key question is whether or not the team wants him to stay. For me, this is a no-brainer. Britt has a well-established connection with the Head Coach, Jeff Fisher, who drafted him in 2009 whilst in Tennessee. Rams wide receiver coach Ray Sherman is also positive about Britt, quoted last summer after their first meeting as saying “it’s been great since then”. At 26 years old, clearly Britt has a highly desirable balance of experience (having played six years in the league) while still being young enough to cope physically with playing at the top level. With Sam Bradford returning from injury (yes, I know we’ve been there before) and a new offensive coordinator on the horizon with what cannot possibly be a less expansive or adventurous scheme than Schottenheimer’s, regardless of who actually gets the job, the signs are very positive for Britt and the Rams going forward.
