St. Louis Rams Officially Announce Cignetti As Offensive Coordinator

facebooktwitterreddit

What should come as no surprise, the St. Louis Rams have officially announced Frank Cignetti as the team’s new offensive coordinator.

Rams Head Coach Jeff Fisher promoted quarterbacks coach Cignetti to offensive coordinator and then made tight ends coach Rob Boras assistant head coach/offense. Boras was also in contention for the offensive coordinator position.

Cignetti will serve as the team’s offensive play caller and lead the offensive coaches through their weekly installations and game planning. Meanwhile as the assistant head coach of the offense, Boras will help oversee all aspects of the offense with a particular emphasis on leading the run game. In addition, Boras will continue to coach the team’s tight ends as he has for the last three seasons.

While Cignetti is the offensive coordinator, there is a certain amount of shared responsibility between he and Boras. The Rams have been known for their running back by committee philosophy, and I guess you could see they will have somewhat of the same philosophy at offensive coordinator as well.

Also taking some development. Former San Francisco 49ers quarterback, Jeff Garcia, will interview for the open quarterbacks coach which has been left open with Cignetti being promoted.  The former quarterback has been looking to get into coaching as he wanted to interview for the Eagles quarterback coach job, but was never granted one. However, it looks like he finally has gotten his interview with the Rams.

There has been a lot of skepticism surrounding the Cignetti hire and for good reason. The former quarterbacks coach will have his first ever offensive coordinator job at the NFL level, and with how stagnant the Rams offense has been over the past decade, many question if Cignetti is the answer.

Only time will tell. Fans wanted someone other than Brian Schottenheimer, and they finally got it. Now we can only hope we won’t be wishing for “Schotty” back.
