Could Jameis Winston Be Jeff Fisher’s Steve McNair?

Prior to the Vince Youn saga in Tennessee, Jeff Fisher had a clear franchise quarterback in Alcorn State’s Steve McNair. After McNair became the full time starter in 1997, it took just three seasons to make a Super Bowl appearance and the two had 10+ win seasons in three out of four years. In nine years Fisher and McNair went 80-57 including the playoffs.

How is this relevant to the St. Louis Rams and this year for that matter? Well, it just so happens that the Rams are in search of a quarterback to compete with Sam Bradford and there just so happens to be a possible Steve McNair 2.0 in this years draft.

You could say the first Jameis Winston of college football was Steve McNair.  The only reason people didn’t remember him that way was because he played at Alcorn State, a small Division II school. Both are also very similar in body-build.  McNair was 6’2″ and 230 lbs whereas Winston is only two inches taller at  6’4″ 230-lbs.

With that ability to break tackles and run whenever he wanted but also the arm and accuracy to run a legitimate passing game McNair took the NFL and college football by storm finishing third in Heisman voting and being drafted third overall.

Winston, also has a very strong arm with the ability to extend plays with his feet. He’s very dangerous in those situations. Once Winston slips through the defense’s grasp, as he did several times last season, he has the ability to beat most defenses vertically with excellent plays

. And not only is he mobile, but he also knows when to stay in the pocket and make the smart throw, much like McNair did.  Both players are smart and both players are athletic.

What is also similar is that the two also share problems off the field. We all know Winston’s story, but McNair got into paternity issues with multiple women, was arrested for DUI, andwas  most tragically, murdered.

While there are obviously differences, just watching the film, its hard not to make comparisons. Their build,  arm and accuracy, as well as ability to buy time is undeniable.

The Rams are in search for a quarterback to compete with Bradford, and while Winston could come in and start right away, it might be better form him to watch and learn in order to mature.

The jury is still out on whether or not Bradford is the franchise quarterback, however, Fisher has found success with a guy like Winston before, therefore it may be worth it to do what it takes to draft Winston.
