St. Louis Rams Intend To Draft a Quarterback

While the St. Louis Rams did just pull of a big trade in which they acquired Nick Foles, they are still in need of a quarterback. It is a given that Foles will be the starter going into 2015, but after that, the Rams are in need of a solid backup quarterback.

As of right now the Rams have Austin Davis and Case Keenum, neither of which are ideal for a backup quarterback. Both would be decent, Davis showed he could win in the NFL last season and Keenum has shown he can as well, however, having a young player to develop and compete with those guys would be a great situation.

At the league meeting’s this past week, Rams head coach Jeff Fisher said, ““It’s our intention to draft one,” Fisher said per Jim Thomas of the St. Louis Post-Dispatch. “The Nick trade has no bearing over what we do in the draft.”

Fisher talked specifically about Petty as having a “very strong arm” and a “good combine.” The prospect is scheduled to meet with the Rams prior to the draft, per the Post-Dispatch.

Petty would be a great choice for the Rams in the third or fourth round. While he’s not going to be a starter right away, he can develop and learn behind Foles. What might be the most ironic part in all this is that NFL.com’s draft profile  has compared Petty to Davis.

It is a give that Nick Foles will be the starting quarterback headed into 2015, it is the reason they made the trade for him. However, when it comes to secondary options, the Rams have learned over the past two years is that it helps to have a guy that you can rely on ready to go.

They traded for Keenum and it sounds like they are interested in Petty, whether or not either of those guys is better than Shaun Hill or Kellen Clemens is yet to be seen.
