The Rams should have signed La’el Collins

Its official, the most sought after UDFA in recent years is a Dallas Cowboy. La’el Collins was a projected top 20 first round pick just two weeks ago, but that quickly changed.

Collins’ ex-girlfriend was tragically killed in Louisiana, forcing him to travel back home to speak with authorities about what had happened. Collins was never considered to be a suspect but that didn’t keep teams from shying away from him when the draft began.

Collins went all seven rounds without being drafted due to the ongoing investigation. As the rounds passed by, this left Rams’ fans questioning their team as to why they wouldn’t take a chance on him.

According to NFL Insider Adam Schefter, Collins attempted to pull out of this year’s draft after it was revealed that police in Louisiana wanted to speak to him and re-enter into the supplemental draft but was denied by the NFL.

Collins’ next wish was to re-enter into the 2016 NFL draft but under NFL rules, because he went undrafted this year, he cannot re-enter into the 2016 draft, leaving Collins as a free agent.

Many Rams’ fans like myself wanted the team to take a chance on Collins in the seventh round, especially after gaining another pick after the trade of Zac Stacy.

Trading Stacy for Collins would have been a home run in my opinion. Stacy had fallen off since his 2013 campaign and was not going to be apart of the Rams’ 2015 plans after drafting Todd Gurley. So trading Stacy for the fourth best offensive lineman in the draft would have been the steal of the draft.

But, like every other NFL team, they were scared to take a chance on a player that possibly could have been involved in the death of a pregnant women, which I don’t blame them in the least bit.

Just days after the draft finalized, reports showed Buffalo Bills head coach Rex Ryan having dinner with Collins in Baton Rogue. Collins was also reportedly  speaking with members of the Miami Dolphins.

“I think across the board I think everybody had interest in him because he was a good college football player, but I think now we just have to let things unfold and see what happens,” Fisher said.

Whether or not the Rams were actually interested or not is something we will never know, but what we do know is, Collins is not a Ram, and that is a little disappointing.

St. Louis drafted several offensive lineman and Collins easily would have been their best one out of the bunch. The Rams could have gone from a top 25 offensive line to a top 10 offensive line in one year with Collins, Greg Robinson and whoever else you want to plug-in on the line in whatever positions.

You can’t blame the Rams from missing out on the Collins’ sweepstakes, but it would have turned a sub-par draft into a pretty solid class of rookies.

How disappointed are you that the Rams didn’t push hard for Collins?
