The St. Louis Rams and 3 Bold Predictions

With talk of the Rams moving to L.A., Fisher and Snead on the hot seat and pressure on the team to get back to the postseason it’s time to make some bold statements. Here are three predictions that, if they come to fruition, will benefit the rams greatly in 2015/16.

Bold Prediction #1: The Rams will win both games against the Seattle Seahawks

This prediction comes with a level of simplicity that may make it seem like the opposite of bold, but don’t be mistaken, to beat Seattle twice on the year will be a true challenge. The Rams have posted a 2-4 record against the Seahawks since 2012. In that time they have never won by more than five points, but have lost by as much as 18. The Rams have not defeated Seattle at Century Link Field in the last three years. The Rams open the 2015 season at home against the Seahawks. They will travel to Seattle right after Christmas. With a season opening win, we might all be in for a nice Christmas as well.

There’s something to be said for sweeping the season series against a team that has made the postseason three of the last four seasons and played for a Super Bowl title in the last two, including winning one in 2014. Add on the challenge of playing in one of the loudest stadiums in the league next to Arrowhead, and top it all off with the intensity that comes with a division opponent and you have the recipe for a serious season milestone.

Bold Prediction #2: Nick Foles will throw for over 3,500 yards

Nick Foles, acquired in a trade with the Philadelphia Eagles this offseason, has never eclipsed 3,000 yards in his three years in the NFL. He came close in 2013 when he threw for 2,891 in 13 games. However, in those three years, he has never played in all 16 regular season games as he is expected to

do with the Rams in 2015. He threw for 222 YPG in 2013. If he kept that pace for the remaining three games on the schedule he would have added 666 yards to his total breaking the 3,500 yard mark by 57 yards.

Here’s where the bold part comes in. He has to do it with the receiving corps in St. Louis,. No DeSean Jackson, Riley Cooper, Brent Celek or LeSean McCoy. Those four players totaled over 3,200 yards receiving in 2013 for the Eagles. The Rams top four receivers that year were Tavon Austin, Chris Givens, Jared Cook, and Austin Pettis, who is no longer with the team. Their total receiving yards that year, 2,057. Foles will need to establish a relationship with his big playmakers quickly to see this prediction come true.

Bold Prediction #3: Tre Mason and Todd Gurley will combine for over 2,000 rushing yards

This is as bold as they come. Tre Mason had an excellent rookie campaign seeing action in 12 games and rushing for almost 800 yards. He overtook the top spot from Zac Stacy and never looked back. Stacy himself added 293 yards, but struggled in the 13 games he played. Combine those two and you get 1,058 yards. Let’s be generous and add on the teams third string back, Ben Cunningham, and the total comes to 1,304 yards. Nowhere near the 2,000 yards predicted here.

Stacy was traded to the New York Jets shortly after the Rams drafted Todd Gurley earlier this spring. That puts the load of the carries squarely on Gurley and Mason. If both can stay healthy and productive in all 16 games this prediction will come true, but the offensive line will need to do their part as well. Even the best of crystal balls may not be able to gauge the production of this years o-line, so this prediction will need a little help from the football gods. The last time there were two 1,000 yard rushers on the same team, 2009, Jonathan Stewart and DeAngelo Williams of the Carolina Panthers.
