The St. Louis Rams were confirmed this week as one of three ‘home’ teams to participate in the International Series in 2016. This will be the second time the Rams have headed to the UK. The first fixture coming in the 2012 season where the teams fell 45-7 to the New England Patriots.

St. Louis actually scored first in that game when Sam Bradford connected with Chris Givens for a 50-yard touchdown in the first quarter. After that, it was all New England with the Rams returned to the U.S. with their heads hanging low.

St. Louis will be the first team to host a game a Twickenham Stadium (by the way, that’s pronounced ‘Twickennum’, not ‘Twicken-Ham’). Situated just to the South-West of London, this fantastic 82,000 capacity venue is the home of the England rugby team and a worthy stadium to host NFL action. The October 23rd fixture will be the second of the three International Series games in the UK next season. The other two will be held at Wembley Stadium.

As yet, we do not know who the Rams will face at Twickenham. The game will be against the NFC East team that finishes in the corresponding position in their division as the Rams do in the NFC West. Interestingly, the third International Series fixture next year is Washington @ Cincinnati – so if the current season works out in such a way that St. Louis will face the Redskins, Washington will play in London two weeks in a row.

As a British fan of the NFL and the Rams since the late 80’s, I am personally ecstatic that the Rams are coming the UK. However, it is interesting to note comments from American journalists and fans about this, particularly in the context of the rumoured relocation of the Rams from St. Louis to Los Angeles. Some have concerns that owner Stan Kroenke’s decision to sacrifice a home fixture in the Edward Jones Dome lends weight to the argument that he wants to pull the plug on the city that has hosted the franchise for the last twenty years.

This article is not the place to argue the rights or wrongs of the decision to bring the Rams back to the UK. All we know is, it is happening. And when the day comes, RamblinFan will have yours truly in the stands to report back to you all.
