The Los Angeles Rams will reportedly go with Case Keenum as the starter and Sean Mannion as the backup in Week 1.

When the time is right, Jared Goff will be the starting quarterback for the Los Angeles Rams when considering all of the future draft picks the team surrendered to move up in the 2016 NFL Draft. Unfortunately for the former California star, that time still seems far away and he certainly won’t be suiting up for Monday’s opener against the San Francisco 49ers.

On Monday, it was revealed by NFL Network’s Steve Wyche that Goff will be inactive for the team’s first game against the 49ers, with Case Keenum being the starter and Sean Mannion serving as the backup. If needed, the Rams plan on using punter Johnny Hekker as the team’s emergency backup at quarterback, but hopefully it doesn’t get to that point.

As frustrating as this may be for Goff, the decision by Los Angeles isn’t much of a surprise when looking at how much the rookie struggled in the preseason. While some of the wide receivers deserve part of the blame for their dropped passes, Goff still made plenty of mistakes on his own and made it clear he’s still far from ready when it comes to being a starter in the NFL.

Obviously, there’s no reason for Rams fans to worry over Goff as this tends to happen with rookies making the adjustment from the college level. Give it time and Goff will prove he was well worth being the No. 1 pick in this year’s draft.

For now though, Los Angeles fans just need to be patient and accept the fact that Goff will most likely spend his rookie season watching from the sidelines.
