In what turned out to be one of the craziest games in NFL history, former Los Angeles Rams defensive end Chris Long finally earned a Super Bowl victory as a member of the New England Patriots.

It’s never easy to let a player go after such a long period of time, but that was exactly the case for the Los Angeles Rams last February after deciding to part ways with defensive end Chris Long. The former first-round pick ended up joining the New England Patriots after spending the first eight years of his career as a member of the Rams, and after Sunday’s historic Super Bowl 51 finish, everything turned out for the best on Long’s end.

Not only did Long finally win his first Super Bowl after the Patriots pulled off the thrilling 34-28 win over the Atlanta Falcons in overtime, but his team did so in dramatic fashion. All hope seemed lost for New England late in the third quarter when they found themselves trailing 28-3, but thanks to the defense stepping up along with Tom Brady leading the way on offense, they were able to pull off the epic win against all odds.

Even if Long’s numbers don’t show much of an impact on defense (one hit on Matt Ryan), it still doesn’t take away from the fact that he finally earned that Super Bowl win after nine seasons. Long made it clear from the beginning that it was never about the money when he made the decision to New England, and the decision was based off his belief in the team’s chances of winning a championship.

Lucky for Long, the decision to join the Patriots after he was cut by the Rams turned out to be the best thing that could have happened for the defensive end, and it will be interesting to see what’s in store heading into 2017. Now that he’s finally been crowned a champion, it wouldn’t really be a surprise to see Long end up deciding to call it a career.

Not many players have the opportunity to retire as a winner, but Long is lucky to be in that position after New England was crowned Super Bowl 51 champions.
