Los Angeles Rams will reportedly ask the Atlanta Falcons for permission to interview Matt LaFleur for the team’s offensive coordinator position.

Between making Sean McVay the youngest head coach in NFL history to bringing defensive mastermind Wade Phillips on board, it’s been a busy offseason for the Los Angeles Rams when it comes to putting together their coaching staff for the 2017 season. Despite all of the big changes, the Rams still need to figure out their plan at offensive coordinator, but according to a recent report, the team seems to have their eyes set on Atlanta Falcons quarterbacks coach Matt LaFleur.

Even though he’s never been responsible for the offensive coordinator position at the NFL level, it’s tough to ignore the success LaFleur’s seen over the last two years working under Kyle Shanahan with the Falcons. Not to mention LaFleur deserves plenty of credit for helping Matt Ryan take home MVP honors for the 2016 season after the quarterback displayed a career year with 4,944 passing yards with 38 touchdowns and just seven interceptions.

Of course, bringing LaFleur on board could be more difficult than expected if Atlanta denies the request by Los Angeles since the team is most likely losing Shanahan to the San Francisco 49ers to be their next head coach. No matter what the results of Super Bowl LI end up being, the last thing the Falcons want to see happen is losing their offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach, as there’s a good chance they will be early favorites in the NFC heading into 2017.

Hopefully, Atlanta comes through by allowing Los Angeles to interview LaFleur, as there’s nothing the team would love more than to bring another assistant on board that could help Jared Goff reach his true potential. The former California struggled in the seven games he started as a rookie in the second half of the 2016 season, but the argument can also be made that Goff’s transition to the NFL would have been much smoother with a better offensive line and stronger receiving corps.

With the addition of LaFleur, there’s a good chance his presence would have an immediate impact on Goff heading into his sophomore season, as the young quarterback looks to help the team bounce back from a 4-12 finish in 2016. Hopefully, the Rams can at least receive permission from the Falcons to land an interview with LaFleur since the team is quickly running out of options for the position.
