The former Georgia star will join the Los Angeles Rams after spending last year on the practice squad of the Philadelphia Eagles.

The good news for the Los Angeles Rams with NFL free agency officially getting underway is the team wasn’t searching for a starting quarterback like other teams as the team has high expectations for Jared Goff entering his first full season as the starter. With that being said, the Rams entered the offseason with questions surrounding the backup quarterback position, and it looks like former Georgia star Aaron Murray is going to have the chance to make a name for himself competing with Sean Mannion.

Murray’s agency announced on Thursday how the quarterback would be heading to Los Angeles for the 2017 season. And while the details of the new deal are unknown at the time, this move already seems like an upgrade over Case Keenum, who was the team’s starter heading into the 2016 season before Jeff Fisher eventually replaced him with Goff in Week 10.

When looking at all of the work Sean McVay currently has on his plate to improve the Rams’ offense, the last thing the new head coach wants to see happen is the team be unprepared at quarterback if Goff were to suffer some sort of injury. Keenum received every opportunity in the world to prove himself last year, and while he deserves some benefit of the doubt for the lack of weapons Los Angeles provided him on offense, the veteran simply just doesn’t seem like a reliable NFL quarterback at the end of the day.

At least with Murray, the former fifth-round pick will look to take advantage of the opportunity to compete for the backup position after failing to do so with the Kansas City Chiefs, who released him prior to the start of the 2016 season. Keep in mind there was a time during his college career when Murray was considered one of the nation’s top quarterbacks before a torn ACL forced his draft stock to take a hit, which means the potential is obviously there for the young quarterback with Los Angeles.
