Robert Woods joined the Los Angeles Rams this offseason after spending the previous four years with the Buffalo Bills.

After the offense ranked last in the league by only averaging 14 points per game in 2016, the Los Angeles Rams wasted no time addressing their need at wide receiver in free agency by agreeing to a five-year deal with Robert Woods. The deal for the former Buffalo Bills wideout is worth up to $39 million, and while his numbers from the last few years may not seem worthy of being a No. 1 wide receiver, that’s not stopping Woods from convincing the Rams he deserves consideration for the role.

Gary Klein of The Los Angeles Times discussed this week how Woods always enters a new year with the same mindset of believing he has what it takes to be the No. 1 wideout, which doesn’t sound so crazy now that he’s a member of the Rams. Even though he led Buffalo in receiving yards during the 2016 season (613), Woods was never truly considered the No. 1 wideout with Sammy Watkins in the picture, but now that’s joined Los Angeles, all of that could change for the former USC star.

At the moment, the debate is still out there when it comes to who is the true No. 1 wideout for the Rams when considering how much of a disappointment Tavon Austin has been over the years. The fact that Austin set a career high in 2016 with 509 receiving yards makes it clear he may not have what it takes to handle the responsibilities of being a No. 1 wide receiver, but hopefully all of that changes while playing in Sean McVay‘s new offense.

But with Austin currently recovering from wrist surgery, Woods finds himself with an extra advantage when it comes to building chemistry with Jared Goff over the next few months while continuing that quest of proving he deserves to be the top option at wideout for the Rams. Between Woods and the emergence of Cooper Kupp, Austin certainly has quite the competition when it comes to battling to be the No. 1 wideout, but at least Los Angeles seems to be in much better position at receiver than they were around this time last offseason.
