Would a Tavon Austin for Eric Decker trade make sense for Rams, Jets?

With the New York Jets announcing their plans to move on from Eric Decker, let’s discuss the possibility of a hypothetical trade with the Los Angeles Rams for Tavon Austin.

When looking at some of the moves made by the Los Angeles Rams prior to the start of the 2016 season, the decision to reward Tavon Austin with a four-year, $42 million deal will go down as one of the biggest regrets after seeing his lack of production. Even though it seems like finding a trade partner at this point seems like a complete long shot, one scenario to consider is the possibility of the Rams sending Austin to the New York Jets in exchange for another wide receiver with a hefty price tag in Eric Decker.

The Jets made the announcement on Tuesday their intentions of moving on from Decker at some point this week, whether it comes from a trade or release. Based off all of the transactions from the last few months after seeing all of the players that have been released or traded, New York has been taking a younger approach heading into the 2017 season, and it appears Decker will soon be joining that list of former players.

After two productive seasons in New York from 2014-15, Decker was unfortunately limited to appeared in just three games last year after dealing with shoulder and hip injuries. But despite the fact that Decker seems fully healthy, and ready to prove he can still make an impact as an effective wideout, it looks like he’ll be earning a fresh start with a new team.

As for how Los Angeles could find themselves in play to bring Decker on board, it sounds crazy to even consider, but how amazing would it be if New York was willing to pull off a swap involving Austin? Even if new Rams head coach Sean McVay may have hopes of trying to turn Austin into the type of deep threat that worked so well with DeSean Jackson, the chances of that actually happening seem slim based off his lack of production from last year.

Not to mention, the Jets claim they want to be moving in a younger direction, and bringing on the 26-year-old Austin who could be used at multiple positions seems like a perfect fit. Trades involving players on both sides may not be as common since most teams just settle for draft picks, but Austin for Decker would be absolutely amazing if the Rams could pull it off.

With that being said, this obviously would be a long shot as mentioned before, but when considering how tough it would be to find a trade partner for Austin before the start of the 2017 season, it’s tough not to at least consider the possibility. And as ridiculous as the thought of this even happening sounds, a swap of Austin for Decker would actually be a trade in which both the Rams and Jets would seem to get what they truly wanted at the end of the day, which is getting each wideout off the roster.
