It is entirely too early for me to be awake, especially on a Saturday morning, but I guess it’s worth it for the draft. We obviously still have numerous needs to fill, and I expect the team to address pass-catching depth and pass-rushing depth before the end of the day. With rounds 4-7 starting in just under an hour, here are some names to watch as the draft continues on.

Everson Griffen-DE (USC) – Rated by some as a first round talent, it is fairly shocking to me that he is still around here in the fourth. It would be hard to argue with the team if they decide to pick Griffen with the first pick of the day, but I could easily see Rams passing on him. There are a ton of question marks surrounding Griffen, and as everyone is well aware, we don’t like guys who are question marks. The question the becomes, does he have too much talent to pass up here?

Aaron Hernandez-TE (Florida) – I can’t say I’m a big supporter of drafting Hernandez considering we haven’t utilized a tight end in ages, but this guy is a playmaker. I saw several mocks that had us taking Hernandez at the top of the third, so the value would be just fine as long as we plan on making the position relevant in St. Louis again. For the record, I think we will see more utilization of the position with a rookie QB under center.

Carlton Mitchell-WR (South Florida) – Mitchell will be a bit of a project for whoever gets him, but physically he is a coach’s and quarterback’s dream. The man is a former track standout who possesses very good top-end speed. Oh, by the way, he is also 6-4. A size and speed combo like that is certainly intriguing, but scouts have wavered on where to rank him. For the record, CBSSports has Mitchell as the 8th overall WR ahead of guys who have already been taken such as Brandon LaFell, Jordan Shipley, and Taylor Price. If I was calling the shots, I would make sure he was wearing the horns next season.

Marcus Easley-WR (UCONN) – Another project, and Easley is even more raw than Mitchell. He is also a guy with a good size and speed combo, and he is a hard worker who is willing to put in the time to get better. If we don’t get Mitchell, Easley is my next guy in line at the position.

There are countless other players who I think would be a nice fit on Day 3, but these are the guys at or near the top of my list. Judging by the way the Rams draft has gone so far, my guess would be that we don’t even think about taking anyone on this list.

I have to admit that I was mildly surprised by the pick of Rodger Saffold at 33, not because he isn’t a good player, but because I really thought we would trade out of that spot. The truth of the matter is that the team had Saffold ranked high on their board and they felt he was too good a value to pass up. It’s not who I wanted, but I understand the pick and it’s hard to argue with getting a first rounder with very few questions in the second. So… who is next on the list. We pick again tonight at thetop of the third, and I really think it’s a safe bet that a skill player is the choice. Golden Tate is still out there right now, but I doubt he makes it to us unless we trade up. A guy I like even more is Brandon LaFell from LSU. He has nice size and athleticism, and I think he would be an excellent weapon for Sam Bradford. A lesser known WR is Carlton Mitchell from South Florida, a guy I’m very high on. He is huge at 6-4, but he also has great speed and is a former track star. He isn’t as polished as LaFell, but there is a ton of upside. This pick almost has to be a receiver or a tight end, so expect one of those two positions to be the choice. Some tight ends to watch out for include Ed Dickson from Oregon and Aaron Hernandez from Florida.
