Tuesday was another good day for the Rams at training camp, as they got some guys back from injuries and saw some impressive performances by others. Rookie RB Daryl Richardson was on the field, as was Rodger Saffold and Scott Wells, although Wells was limited. Also, Robert Quinn continued to impress everyone in attendance with his performance. Here is what coach Jeff Fisher had to say after practice.

“You know what? Practice was good. We got Daryl Richardson back, which is good. He had been working the last few days, we got him acclimated, and looks like that injury is behind him. Good to see him back in there doing some things, been clearly paying attention and really didn’t have any problems in there. Good to have him back. Got a lot done. They battled through the heat and just pushed right through it. We got better today. He has great speed vision, very explosive, he’s tough, he can run inside, he can run outside. He runs the entire offense. He gives us speed, he can get to the edge and set up the outside zone. He got good tracking ability on the inside zone, and good vision.”

On Quinn
“I am kind of just hoping that thing carries over in the games. It kind of reminds me of a little bit – even though you’re going to think I’m crazy about the comparison – but a little bit about (Titans running back) Chris Johnson’s rookie year in training camp when you said, ‘Gosh, if this was a game do you think he’d score?’ And I am thinking, ‘Well if this is a game, he should have a few sacks by the time the game is over’. He has really improved.”

On Saffold
“He’s good. He fought through a little minor pull, and he got back in there and is doing fine. Learning, playing physical, and he and (Robert) Quinn are working good together right now.”

(On having Saffold go up against a guy like Quinn)
“Well, it helps both of our tackles. Our offensive line is getting better because the talent level their lining up against and vice versa. Its good for Robert (Quinn) to work against Rodger (Saffold). They come in, they put in a days work and they learn, they help each other.”

The NFL lockout is long over, so that means the nation needs a new controversy to discuss. Well, for now at least, that issue is the new kickoff rule. For anyone who doesn’t know, kickoffs have been moved up to the 35-yard line in hopes of “reducing injuries” on kickoff plays. First of all, let me just say that I have been against this rule from the beginning. With the leg strength of kickers now days, it’s pretty obvious that a vast majority of kicks are going to end up in touchbacks. Not only does this greatly affect field position, but it takes away a ton of the excitement from NFL games. How can anyone be excited about every kickoff being downed and every possession starting at the 20? This whole thing is ridiculous, but we are going to have to deal with it.

Now, for how this will impact the Rams. GM Billy Devaney was on PFT Live on Wednesday, and he said the new rule won’t affect how the team decides who makes the roster. Devaney said that every kick won’t be out of the end zone and that teams will still need a player capable of handling kicks. Now, as far as I can tell from going back in the record book, the Rams haven’t returned a kick for a touchdown since Chris Johnson (no, not THAT Chris Johnson) did it in 2005 and Tony Horne in 2000 before that. Now I know that touchdowns aren’t the only way a returner can impact the game, but it’s obvious that this rule won’t affect the Rams as much as some other teams. We obviously need someone who is capable of returning kicks when possible, but I don’t think a player should make the team based solely on his kick return ability. For instance, if Mardy Gilyard isn’t one of the top 6 receivers, the fact that he can return kicks shouldn’t factor into that decision. I don’t think that’s going to matter when it comes time to make cuts, but the rule is still bogus.

Here is the latest injury report for Sunday’s game in Oakland.

ST. LOUIS
Chris Chamberlain LB Out (Definitely Will Not Play)
Michael Hoomanawanui TE Out (Definitely Will Not Play)
Josh Hull LB Out (Definitely Will Not Play)
Kevin Dockery CB Did Not Participate In Practice Doubtful
Clifton Ryan DT Did Not Participate In Practice Questionable
Justin King CB Limited Participation in Practice Questionable
Steven Jackson RB Knee Full Participation in Practice Probable
Fred Robbins DT Full Participation in Practice Probable
Laurent Robinson WR Full Participation in Practice Probable
Darell Scott DT Full Participation in Practice Probable

OAKLAND
Travis Goethel LB Did Not Participate In Practice Out
Walter McFadden CB Did Not Participate In Practice Out
Chaz Schilens WR Did Not Participate In Practice Out
Robert Gallery G Did Not Participate In Practice Doubtful
Richard Seymour DE Did Not Participate In Practice Questionable
Michael Bush RB Limited Participation in Practice Questionable
Hiram Eugene S Hamstring Limited Participation in Practice Questionable
Chris Johnson CB Limited Participation in Practice Questionable
Nnamdi Asomugha CB Full Participation in Practice Probable
Desmond Bryant DT Full Participation in Practice Probable

As far as the Rams go, it looks like Ryan and Dockery will also be out, but we will know for sure at game time. SJ39 should be good to go, as should Robinson, Robbins, and Scott.

For the Raiders, it looks like Gallery will likely be out, but Seymour’s status is less clear. Bush is expected to go, but I would expect to see a much bigger dose of Darren McFadden. Asomugha is going to play, and it looks like he will be his usual self.

It’s another late start, so everyone make sure to tune in at 3:15 CST to see if the Rams can head into the Black Hole and leave with their first win of the season. My prediction is Rams win 17-10.
