The Rams held a scrimmage at Lindenwood University on Sunday, and the 6,000+ people in attendance were witness to an impressive show by Sam Bradford and the rest of the passing game. Bradford threw for 4 touchdowns and 140 yards on 13-for-20 passing. It looks like the offense, or at least the passing game, is already up to speed on Josh McDaniels new offense.

Bradford was good overall, but he was even better in the red zone, as he tossed 4 TDs in 5 opportunities inside the 20. “Red zone was important for us, and we try to do as much of that as we can,” coach Steve Spagnuolo said. “So that was encouraging.”

On the receiving front, there were some standouts and several players who more than held their own. Danny Amendola caught 8 passes for 70 yards and a touchdown, and new addition Mike Sims-Walker picked up 3 catches for 71 yards and a TD. Brandon Gibson and Billy Bajema each caught a TD as well in the game. More after the break.

It’s Sunday again, and the Rams are going to give winning on the road another go when they take on the Denver Broncos in the Mile High City. This game, like many others the Rams have played on the road this season, is very winnable. It’s getting harder and harder to predict what this team will do on the road, but here are my keys to the Rams getting a notch in the road win column.

Who Are These Guys? – If anyone wants to sit there and tell me that they predicted Kyle Orton and Brandon Lloyd would be putting up huge numbers at this point in the season, I would probably call you a liar. I’m still not convinced this offense is all that great, and I think our defense should be able to handle them. With that being said, we have to keep tabs on Lloyd. If he goes off for a few big plays, I could see things going poorly for St. Louis.

Mile High Effect – I don’t know if the altitude will be an issue for the Rams at all, but after seeing the team stuggled with cramps last week, it makes me wonder where the conditioning level is for some of these guys. I’m would be willing to bet that the game will be fairly close in the second half, and we don’t have enough depth to lose guys for numerous plays because they can’t catch their breath.

It’s Sam’s Time – I have this feeling that Sam Bradford is going to have a big day throwing the ball against the Broncos, and if I’m right, then he will be doing it in front of fellow rookie QB Tim Tebow, who will be watching from the sidelines. I’m not all that impressed with the Broncos’ pass rush, so I expect Bradford to have some time to get through his progressions. He will also have Danario Alexander back, barring a last-minute change, so the weapons will be there.

I have had some bad feelings heading into games in the past, but I actually feel OK about this one right now. The Broncos can be dangerous when they are on, but they haven’t been on nearly enough this season. My prediction is 27-23 Rams, with the defense intercepting Orton on the final drive of the game to seal the deal.

As is my tradition, I won’t be saying too much about the game tonight while I cool down. I was actually physically ill when Joe Nedney kicked the game-winning field goal in overtime to drop the Rams 23-20. Here are some of my quick reactions to the loss.

First, the thing that makes me the most angry is that the Niners tried on several occasions to hand us the game, and we just refused to take it. They had touchdown after touchdown called back due to penalties, and we still couldn’t find a way to win. When you are battling for a division title, you absolutely have to take advantage of games like this, and we didn’t.

The defense gave up entirely too many big plays today, which is a serious concern for this team moving forward. Overall, the defense wasn’t terrible, but the big plays absolutely killed us. Once again, several of the big plays were called back, which makes it even worse.

This is the point where my blood really starts boiling. I’m not going to blame the loss on any one person, because we all know that’s not how football works, but Brandon Gibson has me all fired up. I counted three occasions late in the game when Gibson had an opportunity to get a big first down, and he came up short every time. The first time he danced around and got tackled two yards short, and the second time he just needed to muscle forward and was unable to do so. The third time was the worst, because he could have gotten a first down that might have sealed the win or at least taken some significant time off the clock, but once again he danced around and came up short. I was literally screaming at the TV every time, and on the third play there were significant obscenities flying on my part.

I could keep going, but I need to stop before I say something I will regret later. Tomorrow I will have an unbiased look at the game, so stay tuned. If you are as angry as I am right now, or if you think I’m wrong on any of these points, feel free to make yourself heard in the comments section.

On the bright side, my game prediction was pretty darn close. I said 21-20 Niners, and it was 23-20. Gotta find the silver lining somewhere, right?
