It’s not a huge secret that defensive tackle is a major need for the Rams, and while there are still pieces to add, the team helped out their depth at the position late Wednesday night. The Rams signed Trevor Laws, a former second-round pick by the Philadelphia Eagles, to a one-year deal. Laws hasn’t done a whole lot in Philly, as he spent four seasons with the Eagles and only started two games. He managed 40 tackles last year, and he did post four sacks the year before.

This isn’t a signing that’s going to blow anyone away, but it looks like a solid move. Laws is going to be a rotation guy and there won’t be high expectations, but he should be solid in his role. He’s still young at 26, so I think there’s reason to be optimistic that he could turn out to be better than expected. There’s not much risk, and hopefully he can utilize his skills as a pass-rusher to be another nice piece of the puzzle.

There’s still work to do at the DT position, and the Rams know it. They have to find a legit starter to play next to Kendall Langford, and they are likely going to look to the draft to do it. There are going to be good players available, but whether it’s the draft or another free agent, expect more new faces to join Laws and Langford.

The Rams got themselves a new defensive tackle on Saturday, but it wasn’t the player most expected. The team reached an agreement with former Dolphin Kendall Langford to a four-year, $24 million deal that reportedly includes $12 million guaranteed. DT Jason Jones, the player most thought would be headed to St. Louis, instead signed a one-year deal with Seattle.

Langford looks like an excellent fit for this team. He’s a big boy at 6-foot-6 and 296 pounds, and he’s only 26 years old despite being a four-year starter for Miami. He has good size and strength, and he should do a nice job against the run.

I might start sounding like a broken record, but I think this is another very good signing. Langford is a proven player at this level, and he is in his prime at 26 years old. The team is going to need to add at least one more DT and probably more than one, but this is a very good start.

There was some good news and some bad news to come out of Rams Park on Sunday. First, the bad news. The Rams placed first-rounder Robert Quinn on the non-football injury list with what the team is calling a “tweaked knee”. According to sources, Quinn injured himself working out on his own in North Carolina a few months ago. I don’t know how long he is expected to be out, but it sounds, at least at this point, like the injury is fairly minor. When more news is released, I’ll make sure to let everyone know. More after the break…
