The draft is now officially in the books, and I’ve had time to really examine each of the Rams selections, so that means it’s report card time. Some of these were easier to grade than others, but here’s my take.

Michael Brockers – B
I really like Brockers and how he fits on this team, but the grade is a B because a 2-14 team needs to leave the first round with a big-time player. He’s probably going to be very good, but he isn’t going to turn this franchise around.

Brian Quick – B-
The Rams absolutely love this guy, so I’m more than willing to give them the benefit of the doubt. But, for a team that is in desperate need of a big-time playmaker at the position, picking a project from a small school with the first pick of the second round knocks the grade down a bit. If he’s as good as they think, then a B- will end up being low.

Janoris Jenkins – A
It’s no secret that I love this pick, and getting a Top-10 talent at 39th is very good. He might be a risk, but it’s one worth taking for this team.

Isaiah Pead – C
I felt like this was a reach at the time, and I still feel that way. There were better all-around guys on the board, and there were better small, change-of-pace guys there as well. This was my least favorite of all the selections.

Trumaine Johnson – B-
I like his size, and it looks like there is potential there. But he’s another guy who looks like more of a project, and I just don’t know how much of an impact he will have right away.

Chris Givens – B
I love the speed, and looks like a guy who could be exciting when given an opportunity. We have been calling for playmakers, and this guy will at least increase the gamebreaking potential.

Rokevious Watkins – B
He has great size, and I really like his versatility. He has the potential to be a starter at guard, or he can be one of those swing guys who can be a backup at multiple positions.

Greg Zuerlein – B+
He is a nice combination of leg strength and accuracy, and he comes at a much cheaper price than Josh Brown. Brown didn’t have a great year last season, so I like the new blood.

Aaron Brown – C+
The team needed to pick up a linebacker at some point, and Brown looks like a serviceable guy for the seventh round.

Daryl Richardson – B-
He can catch the ball out of the backfield and he showed some explosiveness.

I have been doing some research on what some of the so-called “experts” think about the Rams 2011 draft, and I have to admit that I’m a little surprised at what I’ve seen. For the most part, everything I have read has been positive. Mst of the grades I have seen hover right around the B grade, which is about where I had it, and I even saw some A’s and A-’s. You have to be happy about that, whether they know what they’re talking about or not. Now, it’s time for me to run down my grades for the final four picks.

Round 5 – Jermale Hines (S, Ohio St.) – B+

I kind of like this pick, although I don’t know how much Hines will be able to contribute to the defense immediately. Since he is a 5th rounder, he probably won’t be expected to make a major impct right away, so you have to like him as a developmental prospect. He is know to be a hard-hitter and an aggressive player, but he doesn’t have a ton of top-end speed and he can be a liability in coverage. Spags likes his safeties to be able to hit, so he should like Hines just fine.

Round 7 – Mikail Baker (DB/KR, Baylor) – A

My grade here isn’t so much based on the fact that Baker is a great player, but it is based on the fact that I love the fact that the team took a chance on this guy. He has elite (4.3) speed, and he could contribute immediately in the return game. He has had durability concerns, but if we can keep him healthy, we might finally have an exciting, home-run threat in the return game that has been missing for over a decade. Other than Robert Quinn, this was my favorite pick in the entire draft for the Rams.

Round 7 – Jabara Williams (LB, Stephen F. Austin) – B

This is one of those picks that I really don’t feel strongly about one way or the other. Williams has the tools to develop into an NFL player, but he is pretty green and will take some time to be ready. He has a nice motor and does a good job attacking from sideline-to-sideline, but I wouldn’t expect to see him do much more than special teams if he makes the squad. He’s worth the risk in the 7th round.

Round 7 – Jonathan Nelson (DB, Oklahoma) – B+

Nelson is a bit of an interesting case. He can play both safety and corner, and he showed flashes of being pretty solid in coverage during his time as a Sooner. He comes across to me as the kind of guy who could be under the radar, but someone would could contribute on both defense and special teams down the road. The expectations will be low as a 7th rounder, but I wouldn’t be completely shocked if we

I’m not a huge fan of grading drafts before we have actually seen any of the players on the field in the NFL, but as instant draft grades are all the rage, I felt I should put in my two cents. When I look back at the 2011 draft for the Rams, I have to admit that I’m pretty happy with what the team did. As much as I love the draft, I find that my biggest flaw in analyzing it is falling in love with certain players. When I fall in love, and the Rams pass on that player for someone else, it skews my judgement and causes me to hate the pick. That’s why, after taking a step back, I am in a much better place to give an honest assessment of what this team did.

Round 1 – Robert Quinn – (A) Other than Julio Jones somehow being there at 14, I don’t think the first round could have gone better for the Rams. Quinn has all the tools to be a monster pass-rusher at the NFL level, and he and Chris Long should form one of the better DE tandems in the NFL for years to come. Quinn was at the top of my wish list two years ago, and I love the fact that he is on this team.

Round 2 – Lance Kendricks – (C+) I understand why they made this pick, and I think Kendricks could be a very nice weapon for Bradford and Co. immediately, but I just think this was a reach. If the pick were Kyle Rudolph, who was taken a few picks earlier, I would be completely fine with it, but I just don’t know if Kendricks is worth a second round pick, especially considering the players who were available at positions of bigger need.

Round 3 – Austin Pettis – (B-) I was tempted to give this a lower grade because I think it was a pretty big reach as well, but I actually think Pettis is a nice fit on this team. He is a big receiver who will be a red zone threat, and more importantly, the kid knows how to play the position and he is a winner. This was a safe pick, and I have no problem with that considering where this team is in the rebuilding process.

Round 4 – Greg Salas – (B) Salas is kind of an interesting pick to grade as well. He was a production machine in college, and he is another guy who obviously knows how to run a route and play the position. I love his hands, but I just wonder if he is just another guy in this receiving corps. What will he do that allows him to stand out over guys like Brandon Gibson or Laurent Robinson? I think he was good value in the 4th, but we will see if he is able to make an impact.

Part 2 will look at the final four picks of the draft, so stay tuned.
