Pro Football Weekly is pretty good about giving us accurate rumors and inside information, and they had some more discussion of the Rams backup running back situation over the weekend. Apparently, Darren Sproles is still the guy the people in the front office would prefer. Since we already knew that, I thought the most interesting part of the article was another name mentioned that I haven’t heard much about. According to the article, Houston Texans’ running back Steve Slaton has also become an option for the Rams.

Slaton is kind of an interesting case. He had a very nice rookie season a few years ago, but he hasn’t done much since and he lost his starting job in Houston to Arian Foster. Slaton would be a nice change-of-pace back, and I think he probably still has some good years left. I wouldn’t mind having him on our team, but he is under contract with Houston, meaning we would have to trade for him. So, the question is: Would Slaton be worth giving up a draft pick? I would much rather see the Rams pay Sproles or, if they are going to give up picks, go after Reggie Bush before Slaton. It sounds like the team

I have been getting a ton of questions from Rams fan about where the team stands on wide receiver Vincent Jackson. There have been plenty of rumors that the Rams are one of the teams interested in the troubled Charger, but what are the chances he ends up in the Gateway City? I’m not ready to rule anything out, but I would also be fairly surprised if the team traded for Jackson.

First, from what I understand, the Chargers won’t be making this deal unless one of two things happens. 1) The prospective team reaches a one-year deal with Jackson and surrenders one or two 2011 draft picks from the third round or later. 2) A team signs Jackson to a multi-year deal, but in return the Chargers get draft picks in the top two rounds. The reason for this is apparently because the Chargers will get a compensatory pick in next year’s draft if Jackson leaves through free agency after this season.

If the above is true, it would make little sense to bring Jackson in. This team isn’t going to compete this season, so a one-year deal wouldn’t be smart. If we want to sign him long-term, I don’t know if giving up high, valuable picks is a direction this team wants to go. The Rams are committed to building through the draft, and they aren’t going to surrender those picks for a guy with some serious issues with the league.

If the price comes down I could see the Rams making a play, but my guess would be that Jackson ends up in Minnesota. The Vikes are 0-2, which is unacceptable for a team expected to contend for the Super Bowl. They need receiving help badly, and desperation might just get the best of them.

Injury Notes: A few injury tidbits from Coach Spags today. TE Billy Bajema is expected to miss 2-4 weeks with an MCL sprain. Obviously depth at tight end has become an issue with Illini Mike out and Daniel Fells hobbled by an MCL sprain as well, so expect to see Darcy Johnson on the field this week with the possibility of Fendi Onobun seeing a bit of action. Darell Scott will likely miss this week’s game as well with a high ankle sprain. Clifton Ryan is seeing another doctor this week about his migraines, so we should know more in a few days. Steven Jackson and Rodger Saffold are both sore but are expected to be fine.

The St. Louis Rams have selected Dorell Scott DT out of Clemson. Scott played nose guard @ Clemson at 6’3′ and 313 pounds. Scott is the 11th ranked DT according to Draftcountdown.com. The Rams selected Scott in the area he was projected to go. Overall, sites believe he is an underacheiver but could be a steal if he developes. The Rams have had trouble selecting interior lineman over the past few years. This pick could be a reach. I really wanted the Rams to select RB Rashad Jennings of Liberty, or S Rashad Johnson from Alabama in the 3rd round. Jason Phillips ILB TCU is also still available. I know we already picked up Laurinaitis, but you can never have too many great players. Phillips is also a great special teams player. With Chris Draft and Pisa Tinoisamoa getting older and often injured Phillips would be a solid selection. I believe the Rams must find a solid backup for Steven Jackson with one of their remaining picks.

Video of Dorell Scott

From Draftcountdown.com:

Good athlete…Ideal size and bulk…Terrific speed and quickness with a burst…Very strong…Stout at the point of attack…Can occupy multiple blockers…Uses his hands well…Shows the ability to shed blocks…Can shoot gaps and disturb passing lanes…Able to penetrate…Has upside.

From cbssports.com:

Entering his senior campaign at Clemson as an Outland Trophy candidate, Scott was sidelined by a strained knee and didn’t break out until the last few games.

From NFL.com:

The 2008 Outland Trophy Watch List member never got untracked as a senior. He sat out the Duke game and missed most of the Florida State clash with a knee sprain. He delivered 39 tackles (29 solos) with 7.5 stops for loss, including one sack and added ten pressures.
