The Rams introduced new cornerback Cortland Finnegan on Thursday, but they are still exploring other free agent options. Several players are scheduled to be in town to visit over the next few days, and some of the options are pretty attractive. First, defensive lineman Jason Jones left St. Louis without a contract, and he is scheduled to visit with the Seahawks in the coming days. This doesn’t mean Jones isn’t going to be a Rams, but he will explore his options before making a decision.

Also in town on Thursday were center Scott Wells, quarterback Shaun Hill, and wide receiver Steve Smith. The Rams are going to be in the market for a center after the release of Jason Brown, so giving Wells a look makes sense. Hill is a guy I’m not a huge fan of, but the team is looking for a veteran backup behind Sam Bradford. Smith wouldn’t provide much of an upgrade over what we already have at WR, so I wouldn’t say I’m excited about his visit.

Scheduled to visit in the coming days are wide receiver Mario Manningham, offensive guard Travelle Wharton, offensive tackle Eric Winston and defensive lineman Kendall Langford. I have been a Manningham fan since his days at Michigan, but he is another complimentary guy who doesn’t really solve our problem. Wharton could be a nice fit for the right price, and Langford could be as well if he even makes it to town. He could sign with the Bengals before he comes to St. Louis. I already talked about Winston yesterday, but we have to see if he’s healthy first.

Free agency Tuesday started off a little slow, but things certainly picked up as the day went on. Word around Rams Park is that the team has reached a free agent deal with former Titans cornerback Cortland Finnegan on a five-year deal worth somewhere around $50 million. Those numbers aren’t certain, but it sounds like that will be pretty close to the final number when things are wrapped up.

I absolutely love Finnegan, and although the contract is a little bigger than I expected, I think the Rams got a good one here. Finnegan is tough as nails and he adds a bit of a nasty streak to this defense, which is what we need. He’s a former Pro Bowler, and Jeff Fisher obviously thinks very highly of him. I would be a little more nervous about this signing if Fisher wasn’t here, but he knows all about this guy and he obviously pushed hard to bring him in.

In other free agency news, the team is also in talks with bother forer Titan: defensive lineman Jason Jones. Jones has played end and tackle during his career, but I would think he would fit better here at DT if he does sign. He’s a big boy at 6-foot-5 276 pounds, and it looks like he is pretty solid against the run. The team has also reached out to former Houston tackle Eric Winston (who I like very much), but he has other visits scheduled before St. Louis so I wouldn’t say the chances are great. Corners Tracy Porter and Jarrett Bush are also on the table, but Porter looks doubtful after the Finnegan signing. Bush coud still be in play as a depth guy, but the need obviously isn’t what it was.
