The Rams announced on Monday that wide receiver Torry Holt will sign a one-day contract with the team and retire as a member of the organization. Holt spent 10 years in St. Louis after being taken by the team with the sixth overall pick in the 1999 draft.

Holt made seven Pro Bowls, ranks 10th all time on the NFL receiving yards list (13,382) and 13th in receptions (920). Holt is second on the Rams receiving yards, receptions and touchdowns lists behind just Greatest Show On Turf running mate Isaac Bruce, and he helped the Rams to a Super Bowl victory in his rookie season.

I’ve always loved “Big Game”, so it makes me very happy to see him retire as a member of this organization. He was one of the best receivers in the game during a majority of his time here, and in addition to that talent he brought a great personality as well. Torry is a class act, and I hope the Rams find a way to get him involved with the club going forward.

For those of you who got to see Big Game play and enjoyed it like I did, feel free to hit up the comments section with your favorite memory or anything else you want to say about him.

Saturday was a great night for anyone who is a fan of the NFL, and St. Louis Rams fans were more than well represented by running back Marshall Faulk, who was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame along with Deion Sanders, Shannon Sharpe, Richard Dent, and others. If you missed Faulk’s speech, you should probably check it out, because it was fantastic. If you are going to watch it, make sure you set aside a good chunk of time, because it ran for close to 35 minutes. Since it’s so long I’m not going to post it here, but I’m sure you can see it on YouTube if you are so inclined.

Faulk was, in my mind, the most important piece of what was the greatest offense in the history of the NFL in the Greatest Show On Turf. Faulk really did everything, and not only that, but he did everything very, very well. He revolutionized the running back position, and when he was at his peak, I don’t know if there has ever been a better all-around back to ever play the game. He was truly a joy to watch, and he undoubtedly deserves this honor. I know I had nothing to do with it, but I felt a certain sense of pride watching him on the stage discussing his great career. I’m going to put a few quotes after the break, but I still recommend you find somewhere to watch the entire speech if you are interested.

The lockout is nearly over, and by this time next week the NFL season could be officially on. When the 2011 season does get under way, it sounds like the Rams will be playing in front of bigger crowds than they have seen over the last few years. According to Bernie Miklasz of the PD, the team has had the highest season ticket renewal rate of the last decade at 94%. Also, the Rams have sold over twice the amount of new season tickets as they did last season, and that’s with the lockout still in effect. That number is expected to increase once the lockout is lifted and the season takes off in full.

Everything listed above tells me that this organization has things moving in the right direction and, more importantly, that the great fans of St. Louis recognize it. The team hasn’t seen numbers like these since the Greatest Show On Turf days, and this city is aching for the Rams to be not only relevant but ultra-competitive again. The city sees what’s happening with this team, and they are responding accordingly. Bradford and Co. are ready to go, and I can’t wait until the lockout is lifted and I can see the squad in person.
