The week of speculation is finally over, and the Rams have their next head coach. Jeff Fisher has decided to accept the job as the next head coach of the St. Louis Rams, choosing St. Louis over South Beach and the Miami Dolphins. Terms of the deal have not been finalized, but Fisher will take the Rams into 2012.

First of all, let me apologize for waiting until now to post, but Friday is a big day for high school basketball and I have been busy covering a game all night. Now, on to the signing. This is obviously great for the Rams, not only because they get a veteran head coach, but maybe more importantly because the organization lured the most wanted free agent coach here instead of letting him go somewhere else. Fisher is going to bring experience and likely compile an impressive staff to come along with him.

The excitement level is back for football in St. Louis, and rightfully so. My dad, who usually doesn’t have much to say on the positive side, told me tonight he is more excited for the upcoming season than he has been in a long time. Fisher might not be an instant fix, and he might not even be the answer to our problems. However, it looks like his presence has given us all hope that things are going to be different. If there’s one thing we need here right now, it’s hope.

I don’t know how many of you have already seen this video, but I thought it was worthy of a post here at Ramblin’ Fan. This is from the press conference in Cleveland introducing Pat Shurmur as the Browns new head coach. Now, those of you who haven’t seen this yet may be asking… “Why on Earth would he post this video?”. For the answer to that question, you will need to jump ahead to the 2:15 mark or a little earlier. At that point in the video, Shurmur thanks coach Steve Spagnuolo, the Rams’ organization, and the city of St. Louis. Again, you may be asking why you should care. The reason you should care is because Shurmur uses the old “itch my nose while actually giving the middle finger” trick exactly when he mentions Spags.

While I think this video is pretty hysterical, I can’t say for sure if Shurmur actually means to give Spags the finger. Chances are that he is probably just itching his nose, but you have to admit that it’s quite a coincidence that he does it right when he says Spags’ name. I would be a little more outraged if I knew that he actually meant the gesture, but for now I’ll just watch the video, chuckle a little, and think about how much more I like Josh McDaniels as our OC than Shurmur.

News broke today that the Cleveland Browns are getting close to hiring their next head coach, and several outlets are reporting that Pat Shurmur is the leading candidate for the job. I’ve discussed the connection between Shurmur, Mike Holmgren, and Tom Heckert already, so I won’t get into it again. He hasn’t gotten the job yet, but it’s time for the Rams to start making plans for who will take over as offensive coordinator if he does. Here is a list of some guys who might be in the running.

Brad Childress – This one makes plenty of sense, as Childress isn’t likely to get a head coaching job any time soon after the fiasco with the Vikings last season. Childress and Steve Spagnuolo are close friends, and I know they would love to work together. I would have to make him the odds-on favorite at this point.

Josh McDaniels – This would be my personal choice if I was making the decisions. I know plenty of people don’t like McDaniels, but he is still a great offensive mind who could get the best out of Sam Bradford and the rest of the offense. Spags is familiar with him from the Super Bowl, and I know he respects McDaniels capabilities.

Bill Musgrave – I could probably get behind this one if he were the man, because he has a track record with quarterbacks. He will probably still get some play for a head coaching job somewhere, but don’t be shocked if you start hearing his name if Shurmur leaves.

Mike Martz – Martz isn’t actually an option, but I have to put his name down when talking about offensive coordinators. As much as I would love to have Martz back, it isn’t happening. I know most of you don’t share my affection for Mad Mike, but you have to admit that it would be fun to see what he could do with Bradford.
