In the NFL, a team’s performance is dependent on a number of factors, from the ability to pass the ball to efficiency in stopping the opposing team on third down. The factors that probably plays the largest role is the health of the team throughout the season. Last year, the New York Giants’ defensive line was banged up for most of the year, leading to a 9-7 record which barely pushed them into the playoffs. However, the line got healthy towards the end of the season, propelling Eli Manning and the Giants to their second Super Bowl ring in the past half decade. This season, one would expect less injuries with the additional changes to the player safety rules and the existence of an actual offseason for player to get acclimated to the NFL. However, there are already a ton of injuries around the league to some key players.

First we’ll start with the Rams, who have remained relatively healthy throughout the preseason.

Jim Thomas reported the return of G Harvey Dahl, S Darian Stewart, and DE Eugene Sims, meaning the Rams have all of their offensive players back from injury. All three of those players are major contributors, especially Harvey Dahl who was surprisingly pulled last second from the preseason finale against Dallas. The offensive line will rely heavily on the veteran leadership of Dahl and Scott the anchor the new band of starters. Darian Stewart is still battling Craig Dahl for the safety spot alongside Quintin Mikell, while Sims is the third man in the DE rotation, and will likely spot Quinn on run downs.

The news is not all good on the defensive side of the ball, with Jim Thomas reporting that DT Michael Brockers (ankle), DT Darell Scott (Knee), and DT Matt Conrath (Knee) did not participate in practice again on Thursday.

Fisher is known for his rotation at the defensive line, keeping the linemen fresh, and subbing in specialty players in run/pass situations. Scott and Conrath were both expected to be rotational players, especially with Scott now that an ankle injury will keep Brockers out for the foreseeable future. Jim Thomas also noted that Fisher says the ankle is improving, which is at least one good sign for the 2012 first-rounder.

As far as the season opener against the Detroit Lions is concerned, two of the Lions key secondary players have still not returned to the practice field. S Louis Delmas and CB Chris Houston are both likely to be game time decisions, which is extremely good news for the St. Louis Rams passing offense.

Some other key injuries keeping players out of practice from around the league:

Running Backs

Adrian Peterson, RB Minnesota Vikings: (Knee), limited participation

Arian Foster, RB Houston Texans: (Knee), limited participation

I don’t even really know what to say about this team anymore. As I was sitting in the stands watching the 37-7 debacle at the hands of the Ravens, I was trying to remember why exactly everyone was so excited before the season started. Let’s be honest… this team just isn’t very good right now. I’m sick of blaming the injuries. There’s absolutely no excuse for an NFL team to show up with such a lack of fire and enthusiasm for a home game, I don’t care what the scenario is. What I saw today was absolutely unacceptable. It’s almost pointless to point out specific players who weren’t good today, but something has to happen with Justin King. It’s not a personal vendetta against the guy, but he’s not good enough to be on the field right now. I understand that the depth at corner is extremely lacking, but I can’t watch him anymore. As far as Steve Spagnuolo goes, it’s still far too early to make any general statements about his job security. However, something has to change with the way this team operates. I’m going to stop now before I let my emotions get the best of me, so check back tomorrow for an actual recap of the game.

Thursday was a good day at Rams practice for several reasons, but the thing that really stands out is the fact that several guys who have been banged up were back on the field in different capacities. First, WR Mike Sims-Walker is improving and is being called probable for Saturday night against the Titans. It sounds like his groin issue is pretty minor, so Spags won’t push him too hard over the next few weeks until he is 100% ready to go. Donnie Avery was on the field and was reportedly pretty impressive, and it looks like he will be able to do more going forward. Now, it’s no secret that I’m not a huge Avery fan, but if he is healthy I still think he can really help this team. Jacob Bell didn’t go, but Spags said that it was more precautionary than anything and he is improving as well.

Also in attendance on Thursday for former head coach Dick Vermeil, who spoke to the team after practice. Coach Vermeil is well known as a powerful speaker obviously, but it sounds like he was very inspiring today and he thinks the team is headed in the right direction. Anytime Coach is around the team it can only be a good thing, so it’s nice to see him.
