The final cut day came and went for the Rams, and so did a number of players who are quality NFL players. I have to admit that I was shocked when the team let Donnie Avery go, and although admittedly I’m not an Avery fan, I still couldn’t believe it. The bad news is that Avery did not get claimed by any NFL team through the waiver process, which means that the team will have to pay his base salary of $638,000 that was guaranteed.

Although Avery is still unclaimed, several of the players who got cut did find new homes quickly. Thad Lewis was picked up by the Browns, which comes as absolutely no suprise considering former Rams OC and current Browns head man Pat Shurmur is a big Lewis fan. I too am a big Lewis fan, so I hope he carves out a spot in Cleveland. Speaking of guys I’m a big fan of, DE George Selvie was claimed by the Carolina Panthers. If I have one major beef with the roster decisions, it’s that Selvie was cut while CJ Ah You and Eugene Sims were not. Still, Selvie should be able to get some time in Carolina, and I have a feeling he will be a good NFL player. Also, WR Mardy Gilyard is heading to New York to join the Jets. He just seems like a Jets kind of player, so hopefully they will give him a chance. More after the jump…

The signings continued for the Rams today, but it wasn’t free agents the Rams agreed to terms with. The team reached agreements with four of their 2011 draft picks: WR Greg Salas, S Jermale Hines, CB Mikail Baker, and S Jonathan Nelson. This was a good first step on the rookie signing front, but the most important picks remain unsigned. As far as first-rounder Robert Quinn goes, it looks like his signing might be delayed due to on ongoing lawsuit against the player by his former agent. Hopefully this situation doesn’t cause Quinn to miss much camp time, because with the late start he really needs to be here for every practice possible.

In other Rams news, the team apparently made contact with former Denver DT Justin Bannan, but nothing happening yet on that front. Also, the team is still negotiating with WR Mark Clayton, but nothing is done yet.

Now, more bad news. After missing out on Reggie Bush, the team won’t be signing Darren Sproles either, as he has reportedly agreed to a deal with the New Orleans Saints. The deal is reportedly for four years with $6 million guaranteed, which honestly sounds like a pretty good deal, and one that the Rams should have pursued. I’m disappointed, but it’s over, so we need to look ahead. I know things have been quiet so far, but there is still plenty of time for the Rams to bring players in to help this team. Just be patient.

There is a short video up on StLouisRams.com of an interview with GM Billy Devaney, and he discusses each of the team’s picks in the 2011 Draft. He had some nice things to say about each player, obviously, and he talks about the potential roles of each player moving forward. Head over to the site and give it a look. Here are some of the highlights of the interview.

-Robert Quinn – Devaney said the team didn’t expect Quinn to be available at 14, and they are excited to get one of the premier pass-rushers in the class with the pick, especially since he fits the scheme.

-Lance Kendricks – He says Kendricks is more of a hybrid player than strictly tight end and that he will line up in multiple positions for the offense throughout the year.

-Austin Pettis – Like his size and hands and thinks Pettis can play right away and be effective, especially in the red zone.

-Greg Salas – Was the highest player on the team’s board at the pick, and they like his explosiveness with the ball.

-Jermale Hines – He is a big, physical safety who will bring toughness and can be a core special teams player.

-Mikail Baker – Love his speed and his return ability, and also like what he brings as a corner.

-Jabara Williams – Like his potential on special teams, like his athleticism and size at the position.

-Jonathan Nelson – More of a coverage safety who plays the ball very well.
