I’m not even a little surprised that the Rams didn’t get former Baylor WR Josh Gordon in Thursday’s Supplemental Draft, but I’m pretty shocked that Gordon went as high as he did. The Cleveland Browns selected Gordon with the second pick in the second round, meaning they will surrender their second-round pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

Usually, the Supplemental Draft might have a player who generates some buzz and rumors start to fly that he will go in the first few rounds. Then, the guy usually falls to somewhere in the middle rounds. Well, that wasn’t the case ths time. I didn’t really think Gordon would go in the second, and apparently he was just as surprised. “I was more than shocked for sure. I definitely didn’t think that high, but I’m thankful for the opportunity. I’m definitely in shock. It still probably hasn’t hit me yet.”

I don’t know how good Gordon will be, but the expectations are certainly much higher now that he’s a second-round pick. It would have been nice to add him to the mix here in St. Louis, but that’s a pretty big gamble. We have enough question mars here as it is.

I talked a few days ago about the upcoming Supplemental Draft and Baylor WR Josh Gordon, and although the Rams haven’t been mentioned as one of the main teams showing interest in him, I still want to discuss his Pro Day that took place in Texas on Tuesday. Gordon ran his 40 in the low 4.5′s, measured in at 6-foot-3 1/8, 224 pounds, an 82-inch wingspan and 10 inch hands. Gordon also reportedly caught the ball well in his drills despite tweaking his leg early in the workout. Overall, it was a good day for Gordon.

There were reportedly about 21 teams in attendance at the workout, and while I haven’t been able to find a full list, I have seen several smaller groups of names and the Rams haven’t been listed in any. That doesn’t mean they aren’t interested, but at this point I’d say it’s a long shot that Gordon ends up in St. Louis. I can see why the team wouldn’t want another project at WR. When you factor in that there are rumors that Gordon could go as high as the second round on Thursday, it might not work out.

That doesn’t mean I can’t dream. His measurables are pretty much what you would write down if asked to build the perfect NFL wide receiver. He’s fast, he can catch, and he pretty much looks like a future star on paper. That certainly doesn’t mean he will do anything at the NFL level, but the potential is there. After going forever without a serious threat on the outside, I guess any chance I see to get a receiver with size I want to grab him. He’s probably not going to be a Ram, and he might not ever be a good NFL wide receiver, but when you have the worst record in the league over the last five seasons, sometimes dreaming is all you have.

The NFL Supplemental Draft is usually fairly interesting to discuss but it rarely ends up making a huge impact on NFL rosters. The 2012 version is coming, likely on June 12, and there is an eligible name that I think should be on he Rams’ radar. Former Baylor WR Josh Gordon has entered his name and will be available for selection by any of the 32 teams.

I know we already have a ton of bodies at receiver and more than one of those guys could be considered “projects” who still need some refining, but Gordon could be special and a great value in the fourth or fifth round. He is 6-foot-4, 220 pounds and he has great speed and athleticism. He is still raw, but this guy has the potential to be a first-round talent. He caught 42 passes for 714 yards and seven touchdowns as a sophomore at Baylor in 2010, but he was suspended indefinitely by Baylor for a drug arrest before the 2011 season.

The Rams have shown they’re willing to take chances on guys who have had troubled pasts, and I think Gordon is worth the risk. Using a mid-round pick on the guy represents a low-risk, high reward opportunity that could prove to pay off in a big way down the road. It’s probably not going to happen, but it’s worth watching.
