After the pleasant surprise that was Robert Quinn on the first day, it’s time to look forward to Day Two of the 2011 NFL Draft. The first round was pretty crazy with four QB’s going in the top 12 picks, and there are plenty of very good players left for the Rams over the next couple of rounds.

Honestly, it’s hard to predict what will happen over the next few days after the wild first round, but the second round should be quite interesting, especially for the Rams. Only one running back went in the opening round, so a guy like Mikel Leshoure is still there and could still be there for St. Louis. DT is another position that should be available, and although a guy like Stephen Paea is still available, I doubt he will be when the Rams pick. How about a guy like Marvin Austin, Quinn’s teammate from North Carolina? Austin is an impressive talent at DT, and I would have no problem going with Tar Heels in our first two picks.

As far as WR’s go, I was very disappointed when Jon Baldwin went off the board in the first, but there are still guys like Torrey Smith and Leonard Hankerson available. I know the Rams like Smith, and I really like the big-play ability of Hankerson. Those two will both be options, as will Washington OLB Mason Foster. I don’t know if Foster will be there in the third, so it might be time to pull the trigger. Also, no safeties went off the board, and I’m sure the Rams would be interested in Rahim Moore if he were still there, though I doubt he will be. Jaiquawn Jarrett is available as well, so watch out for him.

As you can see, the options for the Rams in rounds two and three are numerous, especially considering our needs and the players available at the positions. I am still excited about getting Quinn, and it is making me look forward to tomorrow even more. Stay tuned, because this thing is off to a good start and it only promises to get better.

Post-Dispatch writer Jim Thomas does his weekly chat every Tuesday, and this one is probably the most fun for me to read with the draft coming up in two days. For those of you who just can’t get enough of Rams’ draft talk, head over to STLToday.com after you get done here to check out the chat with JT in its entirety. There were numerous interesting things said in the chat, and here are a few of my favorites.

JT thinks the Rams are highly likely to trade down on Thursday, assuming Julio Jones isn’t available at 14. In fact, he said that he would put the percentage at about 70. That’s awfully high, especially considering he put the percentage of the team staying at 14 at just 15. I am all in favor of trading down if Jones is gone, so this was music to my ears. This also gives support to the rumors that the Rams are highly interested in Notre Dame TE Kyle Rudolph, which I am starting to hear from numerous sources.

Speaking of receivers, there were several questions about some of the second-round guys in the chat, and JT appears to be leaning towards Maryland’s Torrey Smith if the team decides to take one there. I am a big fan of Smith, and I would be fine with him, but I still think I like Jon Baldwin and Leonard Hankerson a little better.

Daniel Thomas’s name was mentioned as a guy the Rams seem to like, which was also music to my ears. Many of you know how big a fan I am of Thomas, and probably the biggest disappointment of the Combine for me was not seeing him work out. I would love to see Thomas in St. Louis, and it sounds like the Rams feel about the same as I do.

For much, much more head over to the s

It’s no secret that wide receiver is one of the major positions of need for the St. Louis Rams, so I paid very close attention to the group of potential rookies that took part in the 2011 NFL Combine on Sunday. In my opinion, there was some good news and some bad news. The good news is that Alabama’s Julio Jones, the man most pundits have predicted will go to the Rams at 14, absolutely stole the show. The bad news is that he might have helped his stock so much that he will be gone when the Rams pick. Here is my overall review of the wide receivers.

Player I Was Most Impressed With: Julio Jones (Alabama)

I talked about him already, but he really was that good. The man ran a 4.39 40-yard dash, broad jumped 11-feet-3, and pretty much killed every other drill he was put through. Oh yeah, did I mention he did all of that with a foot injury that will require surgery? I don’t know if he’s still going to be there at 14, but I think it’s a no-brainer for the Rams if he is. The injury might cause him to slip a little bit, but I guess we will just have to wait and see.

Honorable Mention: AJ Green, Leonard Hankerson, Ronald Johnson, Jon Baldwin, Tori Gurley, Jeff Maehl

Green (Georgia) is an absolute stud, and he showed it in his workout. Hankerson (Miami FL) and Baldwin (Pitt) are two guys I have been keeping an eye on for a while now, and there is serious potential for both of those guys to be very good NFL WR’s. Johnson (USC) and Gurley (S. Carolina) were both much better than I expected, and they are guys that could be around later for the Rams. Maehl is a personal favorite from Oregon, and while I think he can be a nice NFL player, I’m not sure how well he would fit with the Rams.

Player I Was Most Disappointed With: Torrey Smith

I wouldn’t say that Smith (Maryland) was terrible, but I was really hoping he was going to become a breakout guy at this thing. I liked him going in, but he didn’t do anything to really stand out. He certainly wasn’t the worst player out there, but I was hoping he was going to solidify himself as part of that second group behind Jones and Green, and I didn’t feel like he did.

Dishonerable Mention: Titus Young, Austin Pettis, Jerrel Jernigan, Niles Paul, Jimmy Young

Young and Pettis (both Boise St.) kind of fall into the same category as Smith. They weren’t bad, but neither one of them really jumped off the page. Young could be one of the top guys in this class, but he didn’t leave a lasting impression on me with his workouts. Jernigan (Troy) is a guy who I really like, and his skill-set is excellent, but his performance during the drills was just ok. Paul (Neb) and Young (TCU) didn’t have a great showing, but nobody really stood out as completely terrible.

This class breaks down into a few groups in my estimation: Jones and Green at the top (by a bunch), followed by a group of guys still jockeying for position in the first couple of rounds, followed by everybody else. There are some nice smaller, possession-type guys here, but the Rams already have about seven of those guys on the roster. Jones is the target, but guys like Baldwin and Hankerson, along with some others, could be nice fits after the first round.
