Day 2 of the 2013 NFL Draft started off slow for Rams fans as the Rams traded away their second round pick to the Bills in the Tavon Austin trade, therefore the Rams would not pick until the 71st selection. This did not mean that the draft was not full of excitement however. Geno Smith and Manti Te’o were finally selected and Eddie Lacy was surprisingly not the first running back selected. Quarterback Matt Barkley, who was predicted to go in the first round had he came out last year, has yet to be chosen. The first two days have been exciting and there is nothing to say day three will not be the same.

The Rams hold 4 picks on day 3. They will pick in the 16th spot in the 4th, 5th, and 6th round, they will also hold the 30th pick in the 6th round and do not hold any picks in the 7th round. The Rams have addressed most of their needs in the draft so far, improving on both sides of the ball, but they still have a few holes to fill. The Rams still need to select a physical running back. Some depth at OLB, OL, and S would also be nice. Here are three players the Rams should consider on day three.

Marcus Lattimore:

Had it not been for multiple knee injuries, experts say Lattimore would have no doubt been the best running back in the draft and would definitely have gone in the 1st round. Lattimore however suffered injury after injury in his college career therefore dropping his draft stock. Lattimore fits exactly what the Rams are looking for in a running back, and would be a perfect replacement for Steven Jackson. Lattimore is a physical back that has good speed, but still pick up yards after contact. Lattimore is also good in pass protection and catching the ball out of the backfield. Lattimore played only 9 games last season but still managed to run for 662 yards and 11 TD. If the Rams drafted Lattimore he would more than likely have to start the season on the PUP list and possibly even sit out the whole season to be completely healthy, but if you are looking for a good back for the future, Lattimore should be in consideration. If the Rams end up passing on Lattimore, Jonathan Franklin from UCLA would be a nice second option.

Barrett Jones:

After signing Jake Long in free agency the Rams seem to have a solid offensive line, however it never hurts to have depth. There have been years where the Rams have struggled to keep offensive lineman healthy and having depth would have helped. Barrett Jones would add just that. Jones played center on a dominant Alabama line in college, but could play any position on the offensive line. Scott Wells and Harvey Dahl are not getting any younger either, therefore having a replacement ready would be nice. Jones has been compared to being a player similar to Bruce Matthews. If Jones played anything close to the player that Matthews was, the Rams would be getting a steal this late in the draft.

Bacarri Rambo:

The Rams got one safety day one in T.J. McDonald, however it has been said that McDonald is a big hitter, but doesn’t cover well. Rambo however has great ball skills and had 16 INT in his college career. The Rams need to add more than one safety this offseason and Rambo would be a solid option. Rambo was considered a second to third round pick in the months leading up to the draft, so there is some good value along with need here if the Rams were to take Rambo.

All of these players except for maybe Lattimore are depth players which is really what you are looking for in the later rounds. If the kid ends up surprising you and becomes a stud, then that’s great, but teams that have good depth win championships. The Rams are making their way to becoming a contender, therefore depth is necessary, and these players would add just that and be great additions to the St. Louis Rams.

I know the first thing most of you are going to think when you read that headline is “it’s way too early to talk about the 2013 draft” and “why are you wasting time on this?”, and while I agree with those statements in part, I think it’s worth it to get some names on the radar considering the Rams will have two potentially high first-round picks. Football analyst Tony Softli came out with his Top 50 for 2013 early in the week, and overall I think it’s a pretty nice group. Taking rankings for gospel a year in advance and before a college game has even been played would be foolish, but here are some of the big names to watch this season.

4. Robert Woods WR USC – We will have to see how Brian Quick and Chris Givens play out, but if the Rams are still in the market for a game-changer at WR then Woods is your guy. He is a touchdown machine, and he’s really got it all. This guy will make an instant impact in the NFL.

17. Marcus Lattimore RB South Carolina – I’m surprised Softli has him this low, but he is coming off a serious injury so that probably affected his ranking. Before the injury, Lattimore was the best RB prospect to hit college since Adrian Peterson. I don’t know if Isaiah Pead is the answer as the heir to Steven Jackson, but if Lattimore gets back to 100 percent then he could be a steal in he middle of the first.

18. Barrett Jones OG Alabama – Jones is Softli’s top ranked offensive lineman, which says a lot about the potential crop of tackles but also about how good Jones is. I’m not convinced we have a long-term option at guard on our current roster, so Jones will certainly be on the radar.

29. Xavier Rhodes CB FSU – I know we are pretty deep at CB after free agency and the draft, but Rhodes is an impressive prospect. He’s got great size at 6-1, and he looks to be poised for a big season.

48. Zach Mettenberger QB LSU – The Rams probably won’t be looking at a QB early, but Mettenberger has piqued my interest. He has had a rocky past, but he’s got loads of talent and he’s going to be surrounded by NFL-caliber players this season with the Tigers. If he gets it together, he could have a monster season that could end in a national title.
