I’m not going to sit here and say that I expect the Rams to win the NFC West this season, but I’m also not going to say that it’s impossible. Mike Sando, who covers the NFC West for ESPN, agrees with me. Sando responded to a mailbag question from a Rams fan asking about the possibility of the Rams going from worst to first.

“Yes, the Rams have a chance. It’s an outside chance. They arguably have the most talented quarterback in the division. They have talent on the defensive line. Strength at those positions will give a team a chance. The Rams will need much better luck with injuries. They’re due on that front.

“Also, while the NFC West has improved, the quarterback situations aren’t stable across the board. There are no perennial Pro Bowl quarterbacks standing in the way. Every team in the division has taken too many sacks recently. Sacks put quarterbacks at risk to injury. A teams’s fortunes can swing wildly with an unexpected quarterback change.”

I have to admit that Sando makes some good points, but I’m not ready to crown the Rams as division champs just yet. I guess what I’m trying to say is that there’s a chance. It might not be a good chance, but these things can happen. Don’t give up hope yet, Rams fans.

After the 2011 NFL Draft, one of the most hotly contested topics of conversation has been who will make the final roster at the wide receiver position for the Rams in 2011? To be honest with you, I am increasingly intrigued with the issue. I was checking out a chat with ESPN’s NFC West blogger Mike Sando, and he addressed the topic. In Sando’s opinion, Danny Amendola, Donnie Avery, Mark Clayton, Austin Pettis and Greg Salas are likely in. That leaves Brandon Gibson, Laurent Robinson, Mardy Gilyard, Dominique Curry and Danario Alexander on the bubble for the sixth and likely final spot. Sando goes on to say that he thinks Curry could challege for that spot because of his abilities on special teams.

This got me thinking… Is it really possible DX could be left off the roster this season? I find it hard to believe that could be the case, but if you look at Sando’s argument, it’s hard to find holes. Assuming the team keeps six WRs and assuming Clayton is back with the team, would you rank DX ahead of any of those guys? I’ve made my indifference towards Avery well-known, and I would take DX over him, but Avery is probably a better player if he is healthy. I think the rookies really make this thing interesting. Because of the lockout, I have strong doubts that either Pettis or Salas will be able to contribute right away. If Alexander is healthy, which he said he was in a recent interview, he has to be on this team. Not just on the team, but a major contributor to the offense. That’s just my opinion, but I saw enough from him last season to make me convinced this guy has was it takes to be a big-time receiver at this level as long as he stays

So, I did a post a few days ago about Randy Moss moving on from Tennessee and how the Rams could possibly have some level of interest due to their lack of a number one wide receiver and his connection to OC Josh McDaniels. As I was surfing the web today looking at NFL stuff, I came across an article at ESPN.com by NFC West blogger Mike Sando (written today) discussing the very same thing. Sando pretty much discusses the same points I hit on, including the opinion that the team will move forward with what they have. Sando does say that he believes that the team should keep an open mind when it comes to Moss, and he thinks the connection to McD could play a role in the team’s decision.

Sando also discusses a conversation that he had with Scout Inc.’s Matt Williamson on the situation in which Williamson questions whether it would be a good idea to add Moss to the Rams’ locker room. “As for adding him to that Rams’ locker room, you are closer to that situation than I am, but it seems to me that it wouldn’t be such a hot idea. Does Moss make the Rams a Super Bowl contender this season? I don’t think so.” I don’t want to sound ridiculous here, but if the Rams got the Randy Moss from a few years ago, I do believe they would be a legit playoff contender, and we all know anything can happen when you get to the playoffs.

The question then is: What does Moss have left in the tank? It’s common knowledge that Moss is pretty much only good for one thing: Playing outside the numbers and going deep. It looked during last season that he has lost at least a step, hurting his ability to be a major deep threat. If he can’t give the Rams that threat, then there’s certainly no use for him here. Then, if you add in the off-the-field stuff, it seems like a risk that has very limited upside. I’m still of the belief that the team should and will take a pass on Moss, b
