Rams beat writer Jim Thomas held his weekly chat over at STLtoday.com on Tuesday, and as you might imagine most of the questions involved the position battles on this current roster. JT didn’t want to make too many guesses as to who will make the roster and who won’t be he did provide some insight into what the Rams may be thinking.

As far as the linebackers go, Thomas makes a good point when he says that Jabara Williams has been too good to hide on the practice squad. I really think the Rams may have found a late-round gem in Williams, but he is probably going to need a roster spot if the team wants to keep him (which I believe they do). I think Na’il Diggs is in trouble, and as much as I like the guy, I think Josh Hull may be fighting an uphill battle at this point as well if you believe the team will keep all of the veterans they signed in free agency.

On the DE race, Thomas believes the team likes George Selvie and Eugene Sims, which means CJ Ah You could be in trouble. I’m on record as a big Selvie fan, and I believe he should make this team. I agree on Sims as well, but I wouldn’t be at all shocked if Ah You is on this roster come Week 1.

As far as the WR’s go, JT, with the help of a reader, handicapped the race like this: 1. Danny Amendola 2. Mike Sims-Walker 3. Brandon Gibson 4. Donnie Avery 5. Danario Alexander 6. Greg Salas 7. Mardy Gilyard 8. Austin Pettis. I have no problem with these rankings, but you have to think that the team will want to keep the rookies on the roster so they don’t potentially lose them to another team. I think Gilyard is done unless injuries hit hard, but that last spot will be very interesting.

Just one day after his team’s 17-16 win over the Tennessee Titans, St. Louis Rams coach Steve Spagnuolo held a conference call for media members on Sunday. For anyone who watched the game last night or saw comments by the coach, you know he wasn’t all that happy with his team’s performance. He pretty much felt the same way today, but he did give some insight into what he saw and some of the other issues regarding the team. I can’t put everything on here, but I will hit the highlights.

(Opening Remarks)
“After watching the film I won’t change much of what I reiterated last night. I didn’t think we got off to a great start. After the one play I didn’t think the team responded real well. I thought we relaxed a little bit, that led to some problems. I know the questions about the blitz pick-up, it was a number of different things, all the way from the line to the backs to the quarterback. And I know (Offensive Coordinator) Josh (McDaniels) and staff will get that squared away. The cutback ones were pretty much what we thought. It does come back to gap integrity. A couple of them were missed tackles, we need to get those things ironed out. On a positive note, I did think the offense at the end of the game with the two-minute drive, getting us down there, (K) Josh (Brown) kicking a field goal, was certainly a good way to finish the game. I always talk to the players about, if you are going to compete and they keep score, then we’re going out to try to win the football game. So I got to congratulate the team on that. And having said that, we put the two games together, kind of looked at where we are at. Having plans for this week, getting ready to play the Chiefs so with that I’ll open it up.” More after the break…

I think we all knew it was going to happen, but the St. Louis Rams made it official on Thursday with the signing of linebacker Ben Leber to a one-year deal. The Leber signing is going to make for a very interesting position battle at linebacker after the signings of Zac Diles and Brady Poppinga. It’s interesting to note that the reported $1.25 million deal is exactly what Na’il Diggs is set to make this season. That doesn’t mean anything necessarily, but it’s just an interesting note.

For those of you who won’t be able to make it to the Dome on Saturday for the Rams first preseason game of the season, you will be able to watch locally on Fox 2. It was announced today that the game will be televised live locally which is obviously way better than a complete blackout or tape delay.

On the injury front, Al Harris was limited to conditioning drills on Thursday due to a knee injury, and his status for Saturday’s game is in question. James Laurinaitis will likely miss the game with his pec injury, and Michael Hoomanawanui is still dealing with concussion symptoms. Also, Fendi Onobun had a little setback with the groin injury today, but it doesn’t sound overly serious at this point. Spags also said that the starting offense, including Sam Bradford, will open Saturday and likely see about 12 plays or so.
