According to multiple sources, including ESPN’s NFC West blogger Mike Sando, Greg Zuerlein has been named the NFC Special Teams Player of the Week for last week’s performance against the Seahawks.

By now, St. Louis writers have rammed it into your heads about Zuerlein’s stats, so Ramblin’ Fan won’t do it in this update, but still, you have to marvel at what the 6th rounder has done this season. On top of the weekly honors, ESPN’s Daniel Jeremiah has named Zuerlein one of his five “sensational rookies” in his NFL quarterly report, which is currently gracing the front page of NFL.com. This is what Jeremiah had to say about Zuerlein,

It sounds strange to say that a team hit the jackpot with the selection of a kicker, but that is exactly what Jeff FIsher did in the sixth round of April’s draft. Zuerlein has been the Rams’ most valuable player through the first four games. He is a perfect 12 of 12 on field goal attempts, including a long of 60 yards.

He has undoubtedly become one of the most respected, and beloved, players in the St. Louis Rams roster, both by the fans and his peers in the locker room. Zuerlein should continue his monster rookie season, and will likely re-write the record book for kickers by the end of his career. However, it is not typical that a kicker, especially a rookie kicker, gets the respect and acknowledgment that they deserve. Cheer to Zuerlein.

Make sure to tune into Thursday Night Football and cheer on your St. Louis Rams as they faceoff against the undefeated Arizona Cardinals. Let us know your feelings on the game on Twitter, and make sure that #Rams is trending the entire day. Also, show our award-winning kicker some love with #LegaTron, #GregTheLeg, or #YoungGZ.

In what is usually a relatively slow time of the week over at Rams Park, a good deal of news has actually come out over the past 24 hours or so. First, let’s discuss the roster moves. Nothing hugely significant here, but the team signed LB Curtis Johnson off the practice squad, and they also signed DB Antoine Thompson to the PS. Johnson won’t do anything more than special teams if he is active, and although I like Thompson, I don’t see him making an impact on the defense any time soon.

In other news, Chris Long has been named NFC Defensive Player of the Week. I’m very pleased that his work is being recognized by the league, and hopefully this is a sign of things to come. I know plenty of people have labeled Long a bust after we drafted him second overall, but I saw the player he can be on Sunday.

On the injury front, Ron Bartell and Clifton Ryan both missed practice today. Bartell is dealing with a thigh injury, and Ryan’s headaches are back. Both players will be evaluated later in the week. Justin King is also out with a hamstring issue. Chris Chamberlain was on the field in a limited capacity, and he still hopes to be able to go this week. We should know more by Friday on him. Danario Alexander’s knee was still pretty sore, but he isn’t concerned about it and he says he will be fine for this week. Speaking of DX, don’t forget to cast your vote for NFL Rookie of the Week. If you need the link, check out yesterday’s post.

The trade deadline came and went today, and the Rams didn’t make any kind of move. I never expected the team to do anything, so I can’t say I’m disappointed.
The trade deadline came and went today, and the Rams didn’t make any kind of move. I never expected the team to do anything, so I can’t say I’m disappointed. At this point, I’m not sure if trading for any kind of impact player and giving up draft picks is the right answer. The team stood pat, and I’m fine with that.

Moving on to business, the team released RB Chauncey Washington on Monday. I have to admit that I’m a little disappointed about this move. I loved the upside of the guy, and I really liked his attitude. I’m not exactly sure how or why this all went down, but I guess he wasn’t as impressive in practice as he was with the Jets on Hard Knocks. If he was the same guy I saw on that show and in the preseason, I think this is a mistake.

In more positive news, and because I’m contractually obligated to mention him at least once in every post now that he is officially on the active roster, Danario Alexander has been name a finalist for the Pepsi NFL Rookie of the Week award after his four-catch, 72-yard and a touchdown performance against the Chargers. I would very much like to see him win this award, and I know most of you would as well, so Rams Nation needs to “Rock The Vote” and get him the award. Voting closes on Friday at 11 a.m., so make sure to take a few seconds out of your day(s) to cast your vote. Here is the link … NFL Rookie of the Week Vote
