Filling out the coaching staff is the next thing on the plate of new Rams coach Jeff Fisher, and he wasted no time getting things going. Fisher reportedly interviewed Hue Jackson on Wednesday night at an undisclosed location. Jackson and Brian Schottenheimer have both been discussed for the open offensive coordinator job, and a decision is expected soon.

Jackson’s offensive philosophy seems to be in line with what Fisher is looking to do, and I think he’s a real candidate. He likes to power-run the ball and go over the top with play action, and he did a good enough job in Oakland a few years ago to get promoted to their head coaching position. I’m not pushing for Jackson or anything, but I have to admit I’m starting to have second thoughts about Schottenheimer.

Schottenheimer will probably get the job, and it’s probably the right move. I just keep hearing from Jets fans about how happy they are to get rid of him, and it makes me nervous. I know that opposing fans are always happy to get rid of a coach when he leaves, but Jets fans really didn’t like him. It’s not that I don’t think he’s good, but every time I hear something negative it gets to me. It will be better if/when he joins the team, but while there are still options out there it’s keping me from going all in on him.

The Rams are starting the process to fill out their coaching staff, and now that Jeff Fisher is here, the other pieces are starting to fall into place. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, New Orleans Saints’ defensive coordinator Gregg Williams is leaving The Big Easy to join Fisher in the same role with the Rams. Williams’ contract expired when his team lost to the San Francisco 49ers on Saturday, so expect him to be in place here before long.

Williams and Fisher go back a long way to their days with the Tennessee Titans, so this move was not shocking at all. He helped the Saints to a Super Bowl title in his first season with the team in 2009, but his defenses haven’t been quite as good over the last few seasons. Still, I think he did a nice job with what he had down there, and I like the fit here. He and Fisher will be on the same page, and they will both have some talent to work with in St. Louis. There are holes to be filled, there’s no question about that, but some big pieces are in place to keep this group moving forward. Having a guy like James Laurinaitis running the show has to be a big draw, while talents like Chris Long and Robert Quinn on the ends are attractive as well.

Williams wasn’t the only coordinator to make news in St. Louis this weekend, as Fisher reportedly met with Brian Schottenheimer as well. I talked about Schott yesterday, but it looks like he could be on his way here as well. We are still waiting for more news on the GM front, but my guess is that Fisher would like to get some of his staff in place before really getting in on that search. I would expect all of this to come together pretty quickly over the next few weeks, so don’t be shocked when the news continues to come out.

In a bit of unsurprising, yet still relevant, news, Rams’ offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels will also serve as the team’s quarterback coach for the upcoming season. There was some speculation that McD’s brother, Ben, may come aboard to serve in the same capacity that he did in Denver, but the Rams put that to bed with today’s report. McD served as OC and QB coach for the Patriots, so he has plenty of experience doing both. Also, coach Spags thinks the move will work out, as he’s happy that McD and Sam Bradford will be working so close together when they are actually allowed to do so. “I think it’s terrific that Sam [Bradford] will get the direct how-to-do-it, everything Josh is thinking,” Spags said.

McD is a great offensive mind, and I think this is probably the best move for the team. I think Bradford will become an even better player after some time with McD, and the hope is that Bradford will be an extension of McD on the field. I have no problem with that at all.
