I am a regular reader of ProFootballTalk.com, but that doesn’t mean I agree with everything they have to say. PFT is doing their annual power rankings for the upcoming season, and they slotted the Rams in at 28 of the 32 teams. I don’t know if I disagree with the ranking so much (although I would probably put them in front of a few more teams), but I do take issue with some of the explanation.

First, here is what they had to say about the offensive line. “On paper, St. Louis arguably has the worst offensive line in football. Left tackle Rodger Saffold is considered the team’s top lineman, and he’s coming off a bad season. 2011 free-agent signing Harvey Dahl didn’t spark the group’s play in his first season with the Rams. Scott Wells was signed away from Green Bay to solidify center, but there is a huge hole at left guard. And at least based on recent performance, Jason Smith can be classified among the likes of Wayne Hunter (Jets) and Jeromey Clary (Chargers) as one of the weakest right tackles in the game. Smith has been a brutal bust as the former second overall pick in the draft.”

I’m not going to sit here and say that the Rams have a great offensive line, but I think the group is better than they are being given credit. I completely disagree with the assessment of Smith, and I think the addition of Wells is going to impact the line more than expected. The hole at left guard is a worry, but it can be filled.

“The NFC West has long been considered the weakest division in football, and there is pretty much every reason to believe the Rams are its weakest team. Five or six wins would be an accomplishment for this roster.”

I’m not going to take issue with 5 or 6 wins as an accomplishment, but I don’t know if it’s a foregone conclusion that they are the weakest team in the West either. I’m not sold on Arizona or Seattle, so let’s not put the Rams in the 2012 cellar just yet.

By now I think everyone knows that Peyton Manning is a member of the Broncos, and that Tim Tebow could be heading to a new team. I can’t say that I’m 100% sure, but I’m fairly certain that team will not be the Rams. There was an article over at Profootballtalk.com that listed “Ten off-radar potential destinations for Tebow”, and that list had the Rams atop the list. That isn’t going to happen.

First of all, the Rams aren’t going to waste a draft pick to bring in a backup to Sam Bradford, especially one who doesn’t fit the offense. This team wants a fairly cheap, veteran backup, and it’s usually not that hard to find one of those.

Second, this team has plenty of holes to fill without worrying about Tebow and the circus he would bring with him. Why would they want to put that extra pressure on Bradford? The guy is coming off a rough season, and the last thing he needs is the city of St. Louis clamoring for his backup to take over. Bradford is the future, and this organization isn’t going to do anything to impede his development.

Finally, Tebow just isn’t very good. He might be a great guy and a hard worker, but he’s not a starting-quality NFL QB. The Tebow apologists can point to his record last season all they want, but just watch the tape. He isn’t there yet, and the proof is that John Elway and the Broncos couldn’t wait to replace him. He isn’t going to be a Ram anytime soon.

It seems like news on potential targets for the Rams are becoming far too frequent these days, but with the lockout there’s really not much news to write about other than that. I have to admit that I get happy every time I hear a national writer mention the Rams as a possible destination for a high-profile player, because for several of those down years the only time the Rams were mentioned were as the butt of a joke. Mike Florio over at ProFootballTalk.com had some interesting things to say about Saints running back Reggie Bush today, and I thought it warrantedmention. On Pro Football Talk Live earlier today, Florio discussed how he believes Bush wants out of New Orleans and how intrigued he is by the potential of Bush joining the Rams. Florio mentioned several teams who he feels would be a nice fit for Bush, but the Rams were atop his list.

I, for one, would absolutely love to see Reggie Bush on this team. Imagine how much a playmaker like Bush could thrive with an offensive mind like Josh McDaniels calling the plays. Imagine how much damage the offense could do with Steven Jackson and Bush together with Sam Bradford. This team needs playmakers, and you can say what you want about Bush, but he is one of the most gifted, exciting athletes in the NFL. I might feel differently if we were looking for a workhorse back, but we have one of those already.
