With the glaring lack of depth at the cornerback position, it looks like the Rams might have their hand forced this weekend when they take on the offensive juggernaut that is the New Orleans Saints at the Edward Jones Dome. Reports are coming out of Rams Park that CB Marquis Johnson could make his 2011 season debut on Sunday after spending the first part of the year on the PUP list while recovering from a knee injury sustained last season. With Justin King still unable to practice on Thursday, making his status for Sunday up in the air, it looks like Johnson may play.

I’ve said this before, but I’m not 100% sold that Johnson is good enough to play for this team based on what I saw from him last season in limited time, but it looks like he’s going to get his chance. I guess it’s not really fair to judge a guy based on a few games during his rookie season. I mean, there have been plenty of guys who struggled as a rookie who turned out to be pretty darn good players. With that being said, and with the team in the position they are right now, I think it’s fair to give him a chance to prove he has what it takes to stay on this team. I think I’d rather see a guy we drafted get a chance as opposed to pulling another random player off a practice squad, so let’s be open-minded and see what he has.

In other somewhat disappointing news, the Chicago Bears have signed LB Jabara Williams after he was released by the Rams earlier this week. I really liked Williams during the preseason, and although he is raw I really thought he was a good guy to develop at that linebacker position. I understand why the move was made because we needed another body on the offensive line, but it’s still disappointing. The way this team has played so far this season I don’t like losing young players with upside, but sometimes this happens in the NFL.

Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo met with the media after Wednesday’s practice, and he had some interesting things to say about injury statuses and other issues the team will be dealing with heading into Sunday’s game against the New Orleans Saints. Here are some quotes from Spags on several of these issues.

Injury Status: “(WR) Danario (Alexander) is still dealing with the hamstring. (RB) Jerious Norwood had an illness. We might have, we’ve had a couple guys in the last few days with the bug. They used to call it the bug, I don’t know what it is now, they’ve got all kinds of terms, but he’s got the flu symptoms. And (T) Rodger Saffold same thing. We wanted to keep them away from the building. I believe he came in yesterday not feeling well and still wasn’t right today, so we’re not taking any chances with anything that might be contagious. You know about (DT) Darell Scott. (T) Jason Smith, I told you the other day that he went to a spine specialist. There’s nothing structurally wrong, but basically it’s a bruise on his neck and then he does have a concussion. So both Darell Scott and Jason Smith are both dealing with concussions.”

Sam Bradford’s status: “Not much different. We’re not going to get to, we’re not going to put weight on it or do any bouncing around until it feels good. When we get to that point, then we’ll let you know, other than that it’s the same.”

If they worked on tackling at practice: “No. I knew somebody was going to ask that. The one you saw over here we do every Wednesday. The one the linebackers do, we do every week, same thing with the D-line. There was an emphasis, obviously, we had an issue this past week, so we fix it. And in the team periods there was an emphasis of how we stop the ball and it was a little more physical than normal.” More on next page…

I’ve been trying to be as optimistic as possible regarding the chances Sam Bradford suits up for the Rams on Sunday, be he and the team certainly aren’t making it easy. Bradford missed practice again on Friday while dealing with his ankle injury, although he did do some work with trainer Reggie Scott on his own. I still think he’s going to play on Sunday, and the fact that he tested the ankle out a bit today makes me feel better about that prediction. It will likely be a game-time decision unless he aggravates it tomorrow during the walk-through, so just cross your fingers and hope for the best.

Now, some disappointing news for some of you. Spags said today that WR Mark Clayton and DB Marquis Johnson won’t be on the active roster Sunday after the team activated them from the PUP list earlier this week. Both players have only had this week to practice, so they need more time. I’m sure most of you won’t be losing sleep over Johnson being out, but all you Clayton lovers will have to wait at least another week to see him on the field. Injury report on next page…
