When Randy Moss announced his intention to come out of retirement a few days ago, my first thought was that the Rams would be one of the teams he would be linked to. He has been rumored to be a fit here in St. Louis before, and he was with new coach Jeff Fisher in Tennessee before he retired. Moss is 35 years old, and he looked like a shell of the player he once was at the end of his career. Still, he is one of the great receivers of this age, and I don’t doubt he has something left in the tank.

As far as his fit with the Rams goes, I think I’m still on the fence. Part of me wants to say that we don’t need to bother with him, but Fisher said he was very impressed with Moss in the locker room when he was with the Titans. If he really would play the “veteran teacher” roll while also putting up decent production, it might be worth it. I don’t know that I’m convinced it would go down like that, but I think Fisher and the rest of the organization knows better than I do.

I don’t know that this team needs the kind of distraction that Moss would surely bring, but if he signed for cheap and he wanted to be here, I wouldn’t be devastated if the team pulled the trigger. I don’t expect it to happen, and I don’t even know if there is any team out there willing to give him a chance. It’s something to keep an eye out for, but you Moss lovers probably shouldn’t hold your breath.

So, I did a post a few days ago about Randy Moss moving on from Tennessee and how the Rams could possibly have some level of interest due to their lack of a number one wide receiver and his connection to OC Josh McDaniels. As I was surfing the web today looking at NFL stuff, I came across an article at ESPN.com by NFC West blogger Mike Sando (written today) discussing the very same thing. Sando pretty much discusses the same points I hit on, including the opinion that the team will move forward with what they have. Sando does say that he believes that the team should keep an open mind when it comes to Moss, and he thinks the connection to McD could play a role in the team’s decision.

Sando also discusses a conversation that he had with Scout Inc.’s Matt Williamson on the situation in which Williamson questions whether it would be a good idea to add Moss to the Rams’ locker room. “As for adding him to that Rams’ locker room, you are closer to that situation than I am, but it seems to me that it wouldn’t be such a hot idea. Does Moss make the Rams a Super Bowl contender this season? I don’t think so.” I don’t want to sound ridiculous here, but if the Rams got the Randy Moss from a few years ago, I do believe they would be a legit playoff contender, and we all know anything can happen when you get to the playoffs.

The question then is: What does Moss have left in the tank? It’s common knowledge that Moss is pretty much only good for one thing: Playing outside the numbers and going deep. It looked during last season that he has lost at least a step, hurting his ability to be a major deep threat. If he can’t give the Rams that threat, then there’s certainly no use for him here. Then, if you add in the off-the-field stuff, it seems like a risk that has very limited upside. I’m still of the belief that the team should and will take a pass on Moss, b

When it became clear during the 2010 season that Randy Moss was on the market, I was the first one to voice my opinion that the Rams should jump at the chance to add the veteran wide receiver. Well, shocking (sarcasm) news broke this evening that that Titans will not be bringing back the talented but troubled pass-catcher when the 2011 season eventually kicks off. According to Tennessee GM Mike Reinfeldt, the team is happy with what they have.“I honestly don’t think we’ll try to re-sign him,” Reinfeldt said, via John Glennon of the Tennessean. “We’ve got some young guys we like and I think at this point in his career he will probably go elsewhere.”

So, with the Rams failing to add a true number one receiver in the draft, the question begs to be asked: Should St. Louis sign Randy Moss when he hits free agency?

You can count me in the camp of those who would hate to see Moss on this team. This guy is a cancer, especially for a young team with a young quarterback. Could he help this offense out? Probably. I mean, he was atrocious during his time with the Titans last season, but I don’t know how much of that you can blame on him. The funny thing about this is, while normally I would say there is no chance this team would even think about adding him, the fact that McD is in the fold here is St. Louis makes me think it’s at least a possibility. Moss is obviously in love with everything that has to do with the Patriots, and he had some of his best seasons under McDaniels in New England. I highly doubt that Moss is on the table here, but I will say that I wouldn’t be angry if he did end up with the Rams, because if he would sign here, I would have to assume that there was some relative certainty from McD that he could control Moss and keep him happy. With that being said, I think I’ll still side with those who hope Moss stays as far away from the Gate
