It’s almost becoming dangerous to play cornerback for the Rams these days. Justin King, who had just been cleared for contact after suffering a mild concussion over the weekend, left midway through practice on Thursday after turning an ankle. Spags called it a tweak when he spoke to the media after practice, but there hasn’t been any word on the severity just yet. If King can’t go, the Rams will obviously have a problem. They are already down to the likes of Rod Hood and Nate Ness, so this may be an issue. We’ll get an update Friday at practice, so stay tuned.

On the good news front, Rodger Saffold was cleared for contact and he is expected to start Sunday against Seattle. He will need to make it to the game without suffering a setback, but it looks like all things will be a go. Lance Kendricks is also recovering nicely and he could be available Sunday as well. After the loss of Illini Mike, it would be huge if Kendricks would be able to go. Jerious Norwood practiced Thursday as well, and it looks like he will be available on Sunday to back up SJ39.

The news isn’t so good on Danario Alexander, who isn’t progressing from his hamstring injury. He had a bad day on Thursday according to Spags, and it doesn’t look like he’s going to be ready. Cadillac Williams is also expected to be out Sunday.

I thought things were about as bad as they could get after Sunday’s loss to the Redskins, and I was really hoping this bye week was going to be the start of some good things for the 2011 version of the St. Louis Rams. So much for that. Rams cornerback Bradley Fletcher is going to miss the remainder of the season after tearing his ACL during practice Wednesday on a collision with wide receiver Mike Sims-Walker. Honestly, I don’t really know what to say anymore. Things were already awful on the corner depth chart with Ron Bartell and Jerome Murphy gone for the year, not to mention the fact that Justin King was already seeing far too much time on the field.

Now, the man who was our top corner after the injuries and who was already the number two behind Bartell heading into the season is done as well. That means that our corner group will look something like Al Harris, King, Rod Hood (signed last week) and Josh Gordy (practice squad). This secondary was already awfully bad, and now the one bright spot we had (in addition to Quintin Mikell) is gone. Read more on next page…

In a move that probably should have happened a few weeks ago, the Rams went out and got cornerback help on Tuesday. According to sources, the team signed veteran CB Rod Hood, 29, who has spent eight years in the NFL. Hood is expected to be at practice in full on Wednesday. Some of you may remember him from his time in Arizona with the Cardinals, but he missed the entire 2010 season with a torn ACL. Overall in his career, Hood has 14 interceptions in 94 NFL games.

All I can say is … it’s about time. I’m not going to sit here and say that Hood is some great, diamond-in-the-rough player who is going to solve all our problems, but it has been evident that we need some depth at the corner position. Hood might need some time to get acquainted with the system, but I would expect to see him on the field very soon. We couldn’t keep going with just the corners on our current roster, so I commend the front office for going out and making a move. I don’t know what affect this will have on the much-maligned Justin King, but let’s hope this is the first step in phasing him out of the defense. Speaking of King, a listener of 101 ESPN radio in St. Louis had the line of the week on Tuesday during the “I’m just saying …” segment of “The Fast Lane.” For those of you who don’t know, “I’m just saying …” is a game in which the hosts and listeners make statements about whatever they want, with the preface of “I’m just saying” allowing you to say anything radio-friendly without anyone passing judgement. If this offends anyone I apologize, but I’m just repeating what was said on the radio: “I’m just saying … Justin King has been getting beaten so bad this season he should change his name to Rodney King.”
