Another week, and another disappointing showing for the St. Louis Rams, as they fell to the New York Giants 28-16 in New York on Monday Night Football. First of all, I thought it was evident that the Rams were better than the Giants. This is a game we should have won. The fact of the matter is that this team just makes too many mistakes. The offense had their way with the Giants in the first half but tallied just six points. You have to be able to put the ball in the end zone, and the Rams didn’t. The red zone offense looks exactly the same as it did last season after the team addressed that issue in the offseason with some of their additions. Defensively, I thought the Rams did a great job early. Unfotunately, the Giants made them pay on the few times they broke down in coverage. Justin King just isn’t good enough right now. I’m certainly not putting all of the blame on him, but with Ron Bartell out for the season he needs to be better.

As far as the mistakes go, the good news is that they are things that can be fixed. I still believe these receivers can catch a football, but other that Danario Alexander and Mike Sims-Walker they didn’t show it again this week. DX was great by the way. I imagine we won’t be seeing him on the inactives again this season unless he gets hurt. Greg Salas continues to be disappointing, and I know he’s a rookie, but he doesn’t look like he’s ready to play at this level. I think the team needs to seriously consider scaling back his snaps until he proves he is capable of being consistent in both the passing game and return game. More after the break…

The signings continued for the Rams today, but it wasn’t free agents the Rams agreed to terms with. The team reached agreements with four of their 2011 draft picks: WR Greg Salas, S Jermale Hines, CB Mikail Baker, and S Jonathan Nelson. This was a good first step on the rookie signing front, but the most important picks remain unsigned. As far as first-rounder Robert Quinn goes, it looks like his signing might be delayed due to on ongoing lawsuit against the player by his former agent. Hopefully this situation doesn’t cause Quinn to miss much camp time, because with the late start he really needs to be here for every practice possible.

In other Rams news, the team apparently made contact with former Denver DT Justin Bannan, but nothing happening yet on that front. Also, the team is still negotiating with WR Mark Clayton, but nothing is done yet.

Now, more bad news. After missing out on Reggie Bush, the team won’t be signing Darren Sproles either, as he has reportedly agreed to a deal with the New Orleans Saints. The deal is reportedly for four years with $6 million guaranteed, which honestly sounds like a pretty good deal, and one that the Rams should have pursued. I’m disappointed, but it’s over, so we need to look ahead. I know things have been quiet so far, but there is still plenty of time for the Rams to bring players in to help this team. Just be patient.

It’s been a few days, but my fever and body aches have officially subsided and the flu seems to be almost gone. I didn’t even know you could get the flu in the summer, but apparently that virus does not discriminate. With that being said, I thought I should give credit to a player who has taken plenty of heat on this site and many others over the past year or so.

According to his Twitter page (@MardyGilyard), Rams wide receiver Mardy Gilyard worked out with teammates at the recent workout session in Arizona. Now, I have been highly critical of Gilyard for his extremely subpar rookie season, and I was even more critical of him when he didn’t show at the workout session in St. Louis. It’s only fair then that I give him some credit for getting together with the team to prepare for the season. I still don’t think he stands a good chance to make the team this season, but at least he is putting forth the effort. Rookie receivers tend to struggle in the NFL anyway, so it might not have been all his fault.
