Saturday was a great night for anyone who is a fan of the NFL, and St. Louis Rams fans were more than well represented by running back Marshall Faulk, who was inducted into the NFL Hall of Fame along with Deion Sanders, Shannon Sharpe, Richard Dent, and others. If you missed Faulk’s speech, you should probably check it out, because it was fantastic. If you are going to watch it, make sure you set aside a good chunk of time, because it ran for close to 35 minutes. Since it’s so long I’m not going to post it here, but I’m sure you can see it on YouTube if you are so inclined.

Faulk was, in my mind, the most important piece of what was the greatest offense in the history of the NFL in the Greatest Show On Turf. Faulk really did everything, and not only that, but he did everything very, very well. He revolutionized the running back position, and when he was at his peak, I don’t know if there has ever been a better all-around back to ever play the game. He was truly a joy to watch, and he undoubtedly deserves this honor. I know I had nothing to do with it, but I felt a certain sense of pride watching him on the stage discussing his great career. I’m going to put a few quotes after the break, but I still recommend you find somewhere to watch the entire speech if you are interested.

I can never remember a time like this when there was a new signing by the Rams seemingly every day, but let me just say that it is amazing. The lockout was awful, but this abbreviated free agency period has almost made it all worth it. Almost. The Rams weren’t done with their signings, as they inked RB Cadillac Williams to what is being reported as a one-year deal today. Williams, the number five pick in the 2005 draft out of Auburn, will likely be the team’s number two back behind Steven Jackson with Jerious Norwood as the third down back/return man. All this is assuming health for both Williams and Norwood, who have struggled to stay on the field consistently during their careers. Williams is a former 1,000-yard rusher, and he has proven to be more than capable as a receiver out of the backfield.

I really like this move by Billy Devaney and the rest of the organization. Cadillac may not be the player he once was, but he is well-known as an excellent leader in the locker room and he can still be very effective in a more limited role. It’s pretty amazing that our stable of running backs last season consisted of SJ39, Keith Toston and Kenneth Darby, and this year it will be Steven, Cadillac and Norwood. You can say what you want about who the Rams did and did not get this offseason, but no one can deny that this running back group has been seriously upgraded in just a few short days. I can’t say enough how important it is for this group to stay healthy, but if they can I feel more than comfortable with this group over a 16-game schedule.

It was a fairly quiet at Rams Park on Wednesday compared to some of the other organizations out there, but the Rams did manage to agree to deals with restricted free agents John Greco and David Vobora. Both players will report on Friday and sign their deals, so they should both be good to go. Depending on what the Rams do in free agency, these two players could be major contributors this season at positions of need. Vobora is versatile and can play all three linebacker positions and contribute on special teams, and Greco is a former third-round pick at guard who has yet to live up to his potential. I am still a big believer in Greco, but I have to admit that my patience is running out. If he doesn’t step up and become a solid NFL starter this season, I think the experiment is over and it is time to move on. But, for the record, I think if Greco gets his chance he can still impress. Read more after the break
