Wednesdays tend to be big news days during football season, but there was a bigger-than-usual information overload today at Rams Park. Not that any of this stuff is earth-shattering, but all of it is newsworthy more that just an injury report or other every-day things.

Let’s start where we usually start: Sam Bradford. Bradford attempted to explain the team’s inability to score in the red zone by saying there are too many mental lapses when the team gets inside the 20. “I think it’s a lack of concentration once we get down there. Some of the mistakes that we do make down there, there’s no reason for them, and we’ve got to find a way to eliminate those.” Bradford went on to say “We get down there and we just continue to shoot ourselves in the foot with either penalties or negative plays that put us behind the chains and put us into bad situations.”The sooner we can eliminate those negative plays, I think the sooner we’ll finally start to see rewards.”

Well, they always say admitting you have a problem is the first step to recovery. I think everything he said has been painfully obvious to everyone who has watched this team, but it’s nice to hear him say it. Maybe now that it’s out there, we will see more concentration in those situations. Or maybe that’s just wishful thinking.

Also in the news today, it looks like the Rams have benched center Jason Brown in favor of Tony Wragge. Brown said he was informed by the coaches he won’t be starting on Sunday, but he gave no explanation for the change. I find it curious that the team would make this move now after the offensive line has looked much better over the last few weeks, but I have no problem with shaking things up. Also, the team activated Mark Clayton and added him to the 53-man, so it looks like he will make his 2011 debut against Cleveland this weekend. More on next page…

The Rams took back to the field for practice on Wednesday, which means all eyes were on quarterback Sam Bradford and whether or not he will play on Sunday in Arizona. Bradford wasn’t able to go again today, but he was on the field and according to Spags he was able to take “mental reps.” Bradford said the ankle is feeling much better, but he still isn’t ready to test it on the field. As far as his status for Sunday goes, as it has been for the last two weeks, he is being called day-to-day. I have gotten out of the business of predicting whether or not he will play, but there’s no doubt things look better this week than they did last.

For what it’s worth, Bradford spoke with the media after practice and sounded pretty optimistic that he would be able to practice at some point this week. “If they would’ve let me practice today, I would have loved to practice. I think hopefully by Friday or even tomorrow, depending on how it feels. Hopefully I’ll get in there for a couple reps. Like I said though, I think Reg (trainer Reggie Scott) has done a great job handling this. He kind of knows where we’re at right now and it’s really up to him to make the decision. I think one of the big things is, whatever we do this week, I don’t want to make it more sore for Sunday if I do play. Whatever we do, just make sure that it’s enough to get by and then hopefully go into the game fresh as possible.” More on next page.

St. Louis Rams head coach Steve Spagnuolo did his Week 1 conference call on Monday, and as you might imagine, much of his discussion centered around the roster moves of the last few days and the upcoming game against the Eagles. There wasn’t much “breaking news”, but he did have some interesting things to say. Here is a short recap of the call.

“Just the two roster moves you would have seen earlier, (TE) Stephen Spach was out here we signed him and (C) Tony Wragge, so those were the two guys we signed. We had to make room. We had to release (TE) Ben Guidugli and (C/G) Hank Fraley which again is not easy to do. Especially when guys have been around here and have been loyal and great people, that’s a hard thing to do. Injury wise the guys that didn’t practice was (TE) Mike Hooman (Hoomanawanui) and (DE) Eugene Sims. Eugene’s just an oblique, hopefully we’ll get him through but Mike we don’t know. This one’s a big question mark. We’ll have to take it day-to-day literally and see what happens. Watching…he did some, what we call group install or walk-through. He was out there the whole time. He’s watching and he was in a walk-through. But all he was doing was the mental stuff. But he has a long way to go.” More after the jump…
