It is, and isn’t complicated to see how the Los Angeles Rams got here. Donald may be the premier defensive player in the National Football League, and as such, that comes with a price tag.

A big one.

What’s confounding for fans and NFL watchers alike, is that the Rams have been aggressive this offseason. They were splashy in free agency, and made two significant investments in both Brandin Cooks and Todd Gurley.

Gurley, I get. Cooks, not so much in that he hasn’t played a down in Los Angeles, but hey, why let that change anything?

If you’re Donald, it’s totes reasonable to wonder where his payday is. I mean, the organization has been cutting checks for a lot of people, except No. 99.

And that’s the problem.

If you’re the reigning DPOY, maybe the best at the position, it’s fair to want to be compensated as such.

So does this make the Rams cheap or just ignorant to such facts? Neither really.

Los Angeles holds all the cards. They can play this game for a few more years, and as remarkably stupid as that sounds, they also know that in doing so, Donald comes at a significant bargain.

Both sides know this, and perhaps this may be the reason the Rams and AD now appear dug in for the long haul.

Bottom line: LA may have all the leverage, but the damage could wind up being significant.
