The story that has delivered some interesting staying power this offseason is whether McVay will or will not play a few or any of his starters this exhibition season.

A few reputable outlets had competing and contradicting stories as to whether fans or NFL watchers would see players like Goff or Gurley or any number of other starters against the Texans.

Point is, it’s likely a 50-50 proposition at this point.

McVay doesn’t owe fans any early glimpses of his starters. He DOES need to evaluate a growing concern at the backup quarterback position as neither Mannion or Allen has closed the door on the other. Fact is, before getting a look at Goff, the bigger story is his backup.

One positive this exhibition season has been rookie running back John Kelly. He’s the hands down steal of the 2018 NFL Draft. He’s absolutely been a bright shiny spot for McVay and the Rams, especially in a preseason void of any bonafide stars in the making.

As for McVay and his quandary about playing starters, he may be smart at this point not to. Getting Mannion and Allen as many reps as possible is the better option with two games to go before they get real. If a solution is found in the next two weeks, no one will care who did or did not play from the top of the depth chart.
