Agholor

I kinda think this WR was just caught in the proverbial square-peg-in- the-round-hole conundrum. Philly played him in the slot and all you ever read about the guy was that a disappointment; that he didn’t live up to expectations; that he had too many drops, that he was a draft bust, yadda yadda yadda.  So he goes to Las Vegas, where he gets saddled with the moniker of being some sort of “reclamation project” for Gruden.

Instead of the slot, the Raiders split him out wide, outside the hash marks. Great move, fantastic move! Gruden accents the positive and downplays the negative.  Put that speed be on display.  Let him get to top-end speed. The vertical game, baby. Take Agholor away from the traffic jams over the middle.

All he’s done since the move is produce, err blossom.  And now he’s firmly established himself as a WR1 headed into the NFL Free Agency market.

When the Raiders’ two rookie-wide receivers in Henry Ruggs and Bryan Edwards hit the inevitable rookie walls, all Agholor did was totally step up and emerge as Derek Carr‘s top target.   I watched an 85-yard bomb drop in the basket from Carr to Agholor in their game versus the Miami Dolphins that has to rank as one of the year’s best catches by any WR. Highlight-reel material.

Last year, he played in all 16 games and nabbed 48 receptions for 896 yards and eight touchdowns, and many of those TDs were of the bomb’s-away variety where he just lets his straight-line speed down the sideline do the talking. The guy runs a 4.42-second 40-yard-dash. ‘Nuf said.

Wouldn’t it be nice to watch Stafford just air it out as far as he can throw it and have Agholor haul it in? Talk about someone who can take the top off a secondary, this guy’s our man for just such an assignment.

Now that we have completed our shopping list for speed demons, should we now consider further poaching the Lions WR corps and take a flyer on Danny Amendola, FA slot receiver for the middle of the field? Make him into our Cole ‘Mrs.’ Beasley as he did for Buffalo Bills this season?
