Reason II – Fit?

When the LA Rams switched to the defensive scheme of new defensive coordinator Brandon Staley, the LA Rams truly did not have any players experienced in what Staley wanted to do. So, to jumpstart the group, the LA Rams signed free agent Leonard Floyd in a version of a player-coach.

Floyd had performed in Staley’s defense at the Chicago Bears, and he was the perfect player for the specific role that the LA Rams had in store.  The Rams needed a veteran who was physical. Since the team would be spending a significant amount of time in their nickel and dime packages, the defense needed better than average run defenders everywhere.

Now, the LA Rams are going with a new defensive coordinator Raheem Morris, and he will be attacking offenses in new ways. That’s not to say that Floyd cannot learn the ropes for the new defense, but it raises the question of best fit. Is it right to try to reshape a very talented player from one system to see if he can perform in the Rams’ new system?

Raheem Morris knows the type of players he wants to perform in his defense. The Rams were able to accommodate Staley in setting up the defensive roster to optimize his defense’s production. That same courtesy needs to be extended to Morris this year.
