Mentoring and flying

The history of DeSean Jackson and coach Sean McVay is rich. DJax played for the Washington Football Team and perhaps enjoyed the most productive chapter of his career in McVay’s offense. That’s because he was used as an enhancement for the offense, not as a pack animal to carry it. That subtle difference makes a big difference in Jackson’s performance. You see, DeSean Jackson stretches the field.

Even though he had his best yards per reception with the Philadelphia Eagles, three of his top seven seasons at yards per reception occurred when he was playing for Sean McVay at Washington. He’s back in that offense now and will be catching passes from one of the strongest armed quarterbacks in the NFL, Matthew Stafford.

But he has joined one of the younger receiver groups in the NFL. While teammate Robert Woods is a seasoned veteran of eight years in the NFL, his teammate Cooper Kupp is just four years in the NFL. The rest of the Rams receivers? Rookies and second-year players. Each of whom can and will benefit from the wisdom of the venerable Jackson. Perhaps at some other time in his career, that may not have been a priority for the veteran receiver. But now? Winning that ring needs 53 players, and he can help his teammates to develop both on the field and the proper mindset for that occasion.
