Turnovers are huge to the LA Rams success

If you want to key in on one simple factor, keep an eye on turnovers in the game. If the Rams get them first and end the game with more, they win. If the opponent gets one first and ends the game with more, the Rams lose. Of course, that’s the way it goes for practically all NFL Teams.

The best teams in the NFL all have two things in common: They are the healthiest teams, and they win the turnover battle. Today, December 21st, the Top-5 NFL teams in net turnovers also happen to be the best teams in the NFL standings. Conversely, the Bottom-5 NFL teams in net turnovers produce four of the worst teams in the NFL standings. Only the Baltimore Ravens buck the trend, but they are suffering a three-game losing streak right now.

Turnabout turnovers is fair play

When the LA Rams were 7-1, the team held a very positive net turnover stat of +6. But over the course of the three-game losing streak, the team lost the turnover battle in each game, emerging with only a +1 net turnover stat and a 7-4 record.  But turnover giveth as well as taketh away. The Rams claimed a +2 net turnover to improve their overall net turnover stat to a +5, and their record to 9-4.

FYI, the net turnover stat for the LA Rams next four opponents are:

Week 15: vs Seattle (5-8)  T/O stat +3
Week 16: @ Minnesota (7-7)  T/O stat +7
Week 17: @ Baltimore (8-6)  T/O stat -9
Week 18: vs. San Francisco (8-6)  T/O stat -2

Turnovers are crucial for the LA Rams’ ability to win games. The Rams defense is the 13th-ranked defense at creating turnovers. That’s why the LA Rams defense does not chain DB Jalen Ramsey to the opponent’s best receiver at times. Quarterbacks are simply too savvy and throw away from Ramsey. This year, Jalen Ramsey has three interceptions. One year ago, he only had one.

The LA Rams know that turnovers win games. That’s why the defense is emphasizing that strategy, and how the Rams are suddenly on a two-game winning streak.
