Been in this situation before

The worst thing that the organization could do would be simply to sign someone, anyone, just to have a warm body on the roster. The consumption of time to make introductions, acquaint the new player to the coaches, the players, and the defensive playbook would not be worth the effort. But a player who was on the roster through the 2019 season?

Eric Weddle may not have the burst to chase the fastest receivers. He may not be a chiseled defensive back in the top NFL prime of his career. But he’s been through 13 NFL seasons in his life, and over the course of his career, he’s picked up a thing or two that was never coached to him. Sure, there will be a host of over-the-top comments about how he never made a play for the Rams secondary. But melodrama seems to be the norm now.

Will good not great be enough?

His 2019 season was not great, but with 108 tackles and a completion rate of just 68.2 percent on his receivers, it was a solid season. Yes, he missed a few tackles that year, 8.5 percent to be exact, but from what I’ve seen from the Rams’ secondary so far this season, he should be right at home.

One of the keys to signing Weddle is the intangibles that accompany him to the Rams roster. With the exception of Jalen Ramsey, the Rams’ secondary is littered with young players who may be facing their first playoff game. The addition of a veteran like Weddle is the equivalent of adding a player/coach because he will be an invaluable source of experience and reassurance to the younger defensive backs on the roster.

Still, you have to wonder if he truly worked up a sweat for four hours a day? Or did he, like many who retire, back off the workouts, ease into a slower-paced lifestyle, and start to enjoy life after the NFL?  And what about other options? Who might the LA Rams have considered instead?
