IX – Accelerate development of offensive rookies

The LA Rams burned the 136th pick in the 2020 NFL Draft on tight end Brycen Hopkins, and have kept him on the roster for two seasons. yet have seemingly failed to do anything with him. Well, that’s not exactly true. The Rams have played in for 59 offensive plays in 2021, thrown to him once, and he caught that pass for nine yards.

Nearly all of his work came when the team had to deal with the absence of Tyler Higbee due to an outbreak of COVID-19. But one reception? I understand that the 6-foot-5 245-pound former Purdue Boilermaker may not be the best at blocking. But after two years, you would think that the rash of injuries to the team would have opened the door for him to get more opportunities to help the offense out.

Let the Funk loose?

Rookie RB Jake Funk is another rookie whose value has not seemed to show up yet. Yes, he was chosen in the seventh round of the 2021 NFL Draft with the 233rd pick, but when the Rams added him, the team seemed to have an eye on both the offense and special teams.  While he has returned four kickoffs this year, he has only rushed the football twice.

Even if the Rams were unable to score in their own draft, there is always the opportunity to pick up promising young talent from the NFL Waiver wire. The Rams were able to add a promising young offensive center, Drake Jackson, using that route.  For example, the Tennessee Titans have just waived RB Jeremy McNichols, a 5-foot-9 205-pound rusher who could contribute in both the running game as well as help out as a receiver.  The waiver wire is loaded with players who could help the Rams deliver in areas they are lacking.
