Takeaway IV: Rams should make a huge effort to extend Von Miller

When the LA Rams made an NFL headliner trade just before the NFL Trade Deadline expired, trading for Denver Broncos veteran outside linebacker Von Miller, the move seemed… superfluous. After all, the team had outside linebackers Leonard Floyd, Justin Hollins, Terrell Lewis, Ogbonnia Okoronkwo, and rookie Chris Garrett.  Even with Hollins on IR, the Rams seemed to have a workable and productive edge rotation.

But that is probably why I am not the general manager.

When Von Miller first arrived at the Rams, he came with an injured ankle and was inactive for Week 9. He played the next week, but synching him up to the Rams defense did not come quickly, or easily. After five weeks, and four games, the Rams awaited his first quarterback sack. But the Rams would not need to wait any longer.

Over the next four weeks, Von Miller recorded five quarterback sacks and 15 tackles. He had found his groove, and the LA Rams defense slowly evolved into a physical and formidable component to the team. But one of the more understated elements of adding veteran Von Miller was his Super Bowl experience.  He built up his teammates when they felt down. He even encouraged his teammate, Aaron Donald, to speak up and give his very motivational speech to turn the tide in the NFC Championship Game. And then there was Super Bowl LVI

Now, Von Miller is about to hit the 2022 NFL Free Agency. Although no team can replace the Denver Broncos in Miller’s heart.  But can Von Miller see himself long-term with the Rams?

In his own words:

"“I would love to be here. I would love to. Who wouldn’t want to play where Aaron Donald (plays) for the rest of their career?”-per interview on the Rich Eisen show"

So it seems that, although his trade was unexpected, Von Miller is hopeful to remain with the LA Rams. And I certainly believe that the Rams front office would be very wise to prioritize extending him.  Of course, the Rams typically have a specific price point for their positions, and for players. If another team is willing to pay more? Well, that would be a bummer, wouldn’t it?

I think the Rams can work a deal. Stay tuned.
