Robinson will get a starting role in 2022

Okay, so where does that place the team for 2022? Based upon what we know, I’d take an educated guess that the Rams will likely reform the defensive line with Aaron Donald (pending his return), Greg Gaines, and A’Shawn Robinson. That could mean that the team may view any extension for Sebastian Joseph Day as a luxury that the team cannot afford right now.

So if the Rams lose SJD to free agency, who will backfill spots on the defensive line? Right now, the team is bringing back Michael Hoecht, Marquise Copeland, Bobby Brown, Ernest Brown IV, and Jonah Williams. Some of those players may fill larger roles with the team next year.

Alternatively, the LA Rams can sign veteran players from the NFL waiver wire, sign a free agent, or even add a defensive lineman from the 2022 NFL Draft. Even as the team may not have an urgent perceived need for a defensive lineman in 2022, the Rams scouting department views the draft as the source of roster talent for the following year, or in this case 2023.

For now, the Rams defensive front appears to be one area that may not get a focused approach in the off-season. Both A’Shawn Robinson and nose tackle Greg Gaines delivered outstanding performances for the Rams in the 2021 regular season and in the playoffs.

The Rams roster will be a hot topic for the next couple of months. But based on his stellar performance, it seems to me that A’Shawn Robinson has earned a starting role for the 2022 NFL season.
